An Idea for Infinity

Now that Citidel has taken some major steps to destroy our heritage country FM combo it may be time for Infinity to step up and make 92.9 country. No need for people to start freaking out yet. I do not believe that clear channel would invest much more into 94.9 to take advantage of the downfall of Kicks and Eagle. Best case senerio would be for the Bull to pick up some fired Kicks/Eagle talent and do country with a mostly live airstaff like Kicks use to do but CC won't do that in the way needed to actually bring down Kicks because it costs too much money. I know that Infinity is not in great health either but they will invest more in air talent and promotions than CC or Citidel will and they now have an option for 92.9 that would garner better numbers than it gets now. I know the idea of 4 big country signals is crazy for Atlanta but that would only be temporary. If Infinity picked up at least 1 or 2 leftover Citidel talent and some of the fired ones they could turn 92.9 into a powerhouse country station and let Bull stay at number 2. Citidel leaves satellite Real Country on 106.7 and makes 101.5 into some cheap format. Even though 101.5 has been country since the 70s Citidel has decided to go super cheap on the station and inturn the ratings and billing will fall. ABC owned the country market in town for years but they sold out and now that country combo will fall.

As much as I wish this weren't true...

I think it's a bit naive of so many of us on this board to assume that Kicks is suddenly finished because of the massacre. Sadly, I don't expect we'll see a major ratings drop any time soon. Those of us who poured heart and soul into radio want to believe that gutting the creative bodies out of a radio station means it is immediately dead and buried. But Clear Channel has long since proven that the audience really doesn't know or care when this kind of crap goes on. Truthfully, CC has been gutting stations and replacing local talent with VT and sat-fed morning shows for years, and they still have winning stations in many, many places. Citadel took this drastic action because it can and will work and has many times in the past. They will save money and the listeners will stay.

Is that really surprising in our "American Idol" society? Look at what we settle for in television....movies...politicians. It's no wonder we are served up the MacRadio we get - it seems to be what we collectively want. Broadcast companies give us pig ear sandwich radio 'cause that's all we want.

A little devil's advocacy...

With the demise of 99Xcrement, I think that CBS will wait to see what kind of "pop" Dave gets in the next book.

If Citadel tries to go el cheapo country with Eagle, CC will pick up share on Bull without lifting a finger or spending a nickel. As the old joke goes--"no need to amputate-it fall off all by itself!"

If Citadel wants a cheap country station and a cheap something else, they should keep Kicks country because of the better coverage, better book, and longer heritage. 101.5 as WBIE was country back when 106.7 was WWID Wide 107 top 40.

If I were CBS or Cumulus and had money to spend, I'd wait for the bankruptcy auction and buy some sticks cheap.

I seriously think that if CBS wants to do something new with DAVE, it needs to corner a market not touched by other stations- all news. It makes sense. I think that with ATL growing, and many transplants, it needs to try it again- unlike the unsuccessful WCNN attempt. CBS has management and resources from other all news stations like WINS and WCBS in NY, and WBBM in Chicago. It may be worth looking into.

I don;t believe Dave is going anywhere. They just started a new morning show and lost 99x although I am not sure Rock100.5 is just as big of a competitor. A format tweak maybe but I don't see an all out format change at least for a year since I doubt they would change formats during the Falcons season and summer would be too soon.
