An investigative reporter project

Looks like an LA TV station caught Jiffy Lube red-handed:

What do you bet Houston and DFW tv stations could do the same story and get the same results?

They probably could, and make Jiffy Lube look really bad. But here's my question, as a former TV reporter: Was this story spawned by consumer complaints? Did someone e-mail or call the station and ask them to look into it? That was never made clear in the story. And given the current atmosphere around TV newsrooms these days, I'd be willing to bet somebody decided to do a "sting" because it would bring them big ratings.

Not to let Jiffy Lube off the hook - if they're charging people for repairs they're not doing, they should be held accountable.

That's a fair question. I know nothing more than is in the story, so I'm in the same boat as you on this one.

The station should at least explain why it limited its investigations to Jiffy Lube and didn't check other quick oil change outlets.

This new story is a year old. I saw it before when the AP mentioned it.
