an LA "Fresh" would be nice...

and heres why I think so.

At work, im forced to listen either the Wave or KOST. They both put me to sleep. KBIG plays too much RnB so my boss doesnt like it.

For that reason, I would love FRESH in LA..... but I dont see it coming anytime soon..

Do you mean FRESH in New York City? Haven't heard it, what makes it different or better than KOST or the Wave? I personally find KOST to be a better programmed station than the Wave right now. The Wave calls itself Smooth Jazz, but with all of the vocal pop hits and Motown oldies they really aren't a pure smooth jazz station, and I liked their older imaging voice better, the current voice sounds contrived and kind of weak. At least KOST doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it's always been. But 8 hours of any format can be repetitive and at times downright boring.

I would expect CBS to flip more stations to FRESH in a few different markets, but I'm not sure about Los Angeles. The only CBS/LA FM station that would have any chance of flipping is KLSX, the rest of the cluster is doing very well.

Perhaps KBIG could shift towards a Fresh type AC format? That seems like a logical and easy transition, but I see two problems with that scenario. It would move KBIG closer to KOST and cause too much overlap. Even more significant, by continuing to play R&B KBIG is contributing in making things a living hell for KMVN.

Let's face it KMVN is a huge and important project for Emmis, KBIG on the other hand is just a few bricks of CC/LAs "wall of women". KBIG is in a spoiler role right now, yet ironically has almost twice the share as KMVN. For that reason alone it would make strategic sense for KBIG to keep the R&B flowing.

I'm still not sure what the Fresh format sounds like. I take it that it's a soft AC that plays only 80's and 90's music as it's oldies along with current Soft/Mainstream AC hits? Am I close? Why would it be that much better than KOST?

Your summary of the CC Cluster seems close to right on. KBIG has been traditionally used by CC as protection for KOST and at the same time it has filled the dance music hole in LA, one that KMVN wants as well. But it's been a failure to launch situation. Just not enough pieces of the puzzle were in place from the start, plus, no real hole to fill. The question is, how long with Emmis try to make this format work. It's an uphill battle for sure and at this point would seem to be a dismal failure. But what if KMVN tried the Fresh format? By the way, KBIG doesn't really play R&B. It's more dance and many dance mixes of mainstream AC songs. KBIG's only real weakness is the aberration that is Delilah.

Here is a sample hour of FRESH/NYC

Train-Drops Of Jupiter
Corinne Bailey Rae-Put Your Records On
Kylie Minogue-Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Red Hot Chilli Peppers-Under The Bridge
Kelly Clarkson-Since U Been Gone
U2-One
Justin Timberlake-Rock Your Body
Phil Collins-In The Air Tonight
Carrie Underwood-Before He Cheats
Dave Mathews Band-The Space Between
Jennifer Paige-Crush
Gwen Stefani-The Sweet Escape

This looks like a mix between KBIG and STAR. I don't think this would hurt KOST very much because they are softer and aim for an older demo.

It doesn't seem like there is a hole for CBS to put a FRESH on in LA, the fragmentation would become very extreme if they did.

It also wouldn't be a good move for KBIG to shift towards a FRESH direction, it would hurt STAR (more so than KOST) and it would help Movin'.
