An meaningless AM application?

I noticed that KTXV 890 Mabank ("Radio Saigon") has applied for a change from a Class B station to a Class D. That's because they asking the FCC for permission to drop their nighttime authorization. While their 20,000 watt daytime signal has fairly good penetration into some parts of the Dallas area it's certainly not remarkable; the transmitter site (just southeast of Eustace) is roughly 55 miles southeast of downtown Dallas. The KTXV studios are located off LBJ around Walnut Hill and as required by FCC rules are within the city-grade contour; one has to assume that the only thing in Mabank is an office containing the station's public file.

KTXV's nighttime operation, with just 250 watts that barely made it 10 miles away, has been used only sporadically since the station went on the air. It just wasn't worth the expense. My question is whether this move really is meaningless. Maybe they don't intend to remain a daytime only Class D. Stations of that class can operate with up to 249 watts at night, and what's more, they don't have to provide comparable coverage like they do during daylight. AM stations have to provide daytime city-grade coverage of all or essentially all of their community of license. Nighttime Class D's don't. In fact they don't have to provide any COL coverage. So who knows if KTXQ officially going daytime only is meaningless? It looks like they could apply for a low-power nighttime operation at some future time, probably in Dallas.

Damn dyslexic fingers. Or maybe a sub-conscious memory of the many years I spent there.

How far north will that signal travel at night if they do? I have a hard enough time hearing WLS after dark as it is. ;D

The application states since they run a format aimed at the Vietnamese population in the Metroplex and the night signal can't cover that population, it isn't economically viable to have the night operation.

Isn't even on...they also filed a STA to shut off it immediately. Here is the link to that...

https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...t=25&appn=101364766&formid=911&fac_num=161266

The text (they wrote it in caps, not me):

"REQUEST FOR STA

EARLIER TODAY, BUSTOS MEDIA HOLDINGS, LLC FILED AN FCC FORM 301 APPLICATION TO DOWNGRADE THE FACILITIES OF KTXV(AM) TO CLASS D STATUS, FILE NO. BP-20100421ACV.

THIS IS TO REQUEST A SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORIZATION TO DISCONTINUE NIGHTTIME SERVICE OVER KTXV IMMEDIATELY. BUSTOS SEEKS AUTHORITY TO OPERATE KTXV(AM) WITH ITS DAYTIME POWER AND DIRECTIONAL ANTENNA SYSTEM FROM LOCAL SUNRISE TO LOCAL SUNSET ONLY. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT BUSTOS HAS DETERMINED THAT IT IS UNECONOMICAL TO OPERATE AT NIGHT, WHEN ITS CORE AUDIENCE RESIDES OUTSIDE THE LICENSED NIGHTTIME INTERFERENCE FREE CONTOUR (THE STATION PROVIDES PROGRAMMING IN THE VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE TO LISTENERS THROUGHOUT THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH 'METROPLEX', BUT THERE ARE NO KNOWN VIETNAMESE SPEAKERS IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE KTXV TRANSMITTER SITE).

IT IS SUBMITTED THAT THE PUBLIC INTEREST, CONVENIENCE AND NECESSITY WOULD BE WELL SERVED BY A GRANT OF THIS STA REQUEST UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THE COMMISSION CAN ACT ON BP-20100421ACV."

Hmm, so broadcast in english at night? Seems short sighted (well the whole concept seems short sighted but that's another story)

Well here's a thought:

Get a transmitter and license with Nighttime authorization only from sunset to sunrise, change calls to KTXQ and blast country and western across the Eustace plains! Then sign off and let Bustos do thier thing!

Not only could someone else run an English music station but can also freak the crap out of them with the call sign! ;D
