An Odd Question

Not sure where this belongs so I'll post it here.

My apartment is one of 3 located above a dentist office. When the dentist office is open for business my FM reception is horrible no matter which of my 3 radio's I use. Most stations are very staticy. Once the dentist office closes for the day FM reception is much improved. The stations are almost 100% Crystal clear as if all the station's magically received a boost in power.

Can anyone explain to me why this is happening?

The dentist wants you to come downstairs for some fillings in order to improve your reception. Keeping them polished usually helps with reception too.

On the other hand, it might just be that he has flourescent lighting which is murder on radio reception.

Yeah from what you said before about your crib, the electric is probably all tied together in questionable ways too, so there ain't even as much protection from the fluorescent lights and drills and equipment as you would get in most places.

Once I lived in a place that was wired from a house next door. The plumbing also came from next door. The landlord biotched about the electric bill, but would never put a separate meter on the place. One day about two years into living there I saw why he didn't want the electric meter, when I had occasion to need to go under the house. The whole place was powered by four wires -aluminum at that. They were all screwed together and connected to an in the wall electrical box that you would use for a double electrical outlet. The box was dangling loose from a beam. LOL

The reason the electric bill was so high, according to a guy who came to check it all out (not from the power company) was because there was a nick in the wire that was running underground from next door. HA HA HA When it got damp or wet it made the current move, if you get my drift.

I stayed another six years without incident, but the landlord never complained about the bill again once we told him what happened. I never had any reception problems though. When I had Internet and cable connected the guy from Comcast said, after having a look underneath, that he was just going to run everything along the outside wall, but he would make it so that it would not look bad. ROFL

Just the American Dental Association jamming all of those talk shows.
They don't want you to hear the truth about Fluoridated Water! :D

The equipment is probably adding interference. Fluorescent lights, especially the new ones using electronic ballasts (which is the law now for new fixtures) add a bunch of interference to FM.

Case and point, we used to listen to FM at the store I work at. We upgraded our older T12 magnetic ballast fluorescent tube lighting to newer electronic T8 tubes since it was partially paid for by the state. The electronic ballasts produce so much noise over the FM band that even the strongest of signals are reduced to an unlistenable state.
