An Old Radio Question Solved (Unknowingly) On Bill Hower's Music Box on RDV

You never know where you'll find an answer to an old radio memory rattling around in your head. I have always distinctly remembered the news sounder that WBUX used back in the 1960's (along with some other stations) but I never knew where they got it. Last year Kevin Fennessey graciously shared some old WBUX jingles with me from that era but the sounder wasn't in that jingle package. I haven't heard anyone use it for many years. Then Friday night I heard Bill Hower on WRDV start his show with an old beautiful music Percy Faith orchestra song called "El Rancho Grande" and there in the first few notes of the instrumental song was that old news sounder - so it wasn't produced for radio, but lifted from an instrumental! Very interesting.

I know WOGL uses the Beatles clip from "Drive My Car" for a traffic intro and stations used to use the car sounds from "Expressway To Your Heart", but I wonder if anyone today uses a news sounder from a song rather than produced specifically as a sounder?

As I recall, when WBUX became a "Hot AC" in 1990-91 (prior to "Your 70s Connection), their traffic bed was a loop of the intro from Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". NOTE: A sound-alike version was used on Channel 3 during their "Make the connection" campaign from 1979-1980 (?). (not sure of the exact years, but do a search on "KYW" on You Tube and look for the "Direct Connection" video).

For the record, WVLT in Vineland still uses the unofficial "intro" to "Expressway To Your Heart" on their traffic updates.

As far as the Donna Summer song, I believe one of the Providence TV stations (I wanna say 12) used that as their news theme?

Sheeeesh. I can't remember what WBUX used, I thought it sounded like " Walk In the Black Forest", done like a march. If anyone has that file and can link it, I'd like to hear it.

Bobby Charger found the original WIBG news intro...which was from a Buddy Morrow LP called " Sea Hunt".

WBCB's classic news intro was " Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" by Enoch Light.

The WIP classic news intro was from the MARS Productions library...WNEW used it also.

One of the funniest I ever heard was for the former WRIO in Cape May. They had this Tony Bennett record about Rio De Jenero. the singers at the start of it, wailed: "Reeeeooooohhh, reeeooohhh, ooooooo, oooo Reeeoooh". Then they'd pot it down and a young announcer with a high pitched voice ( hold your nose if you're doing this at home), announced: " This is WRIO in Cape May New Jersey, stereo 101.7".

It wasn't used for "news" or "traffic", but an '80s recording by Herb Alpert was used as the hourly intro to the old WMGK Million Dollar Weekend. The recording is called "The Continental", found on the BEYOND album (a followup to RISE). Don't look for it on CD - it's only ever been released on CD in Japan.

For the WMGK Million Dollar Weekend, the intro to the song, with an edit to the final note of the record was used.

For what it's worth:

The Buddy Morrow "Sea Hunt" track is from the album "Impact."

WIBBAGE used an eerie sounding music bed for some of their PSA's in the early 60's. It was from the soundtrack to "Experiment In Terror" by Henry Mancini
