An open letter to the PD and MD at K-Rock

Hey guys,

First I wanted to say I was really excited to hear K-Rock was coming back. After nearly 2 years without a true current rock station (I'm not counting the "Great Rock. Period" period as there being a legit rock station) it's nice to know you guys are back.

First, I'd like to compliment you on taking some slight chances. It's nice to hear the new Silverchair song and I'm psyched you guys play Muse as much as you do. However, it seems that the playlist suffers from a real lack of currents. It's cool with me if you guys go in either an Active or Alternative direction, but I would like to hear more current songs. I mean, that's the whole point of having a current rock station, right? You play new music.

Also, perhaps you can leave the classic rock (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd) to Q. Not saying those songs aren't great but they're taking up space that could be used for artists that aren't heard anywhere else on the dial.

Anyways, I hope you guys are working hard on the format. Right now I'm going to get another barbed wire tattoo around my bicep and drink some beers with my shirt off on my front lawn in New Jersey. Thanks for reading!

Agreed on almost all counts. However, let's not kid ourselves - this incarnation of K-Rock is proving to be little more than Great Rock Period v2.0 thus far. In their Top 20 most played songs are tracks that are two years old (30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill) and some that are one year old (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down, Tool - The Pot, Foo Fighters - Best Of You, etc.). That leaves about 15 or so (actually less) real Currents that they play. Combine this with a very heavy dose of the Classic Rock that gets played to death on Q 104.3, and there's practically no difference from Great Rock Period. K-Rock is just a Classic Rock station for a slightly younger audience.

And on Muse: If by playing Muse a lot you mean giving "Starlight" and "Knights Of Cydonia" a whole bunch of spins, you're dead on. But I've never heard them play anything else from them, not even "Supermassive Black Hole" or "Time Is Running Out".

I personally don't care whether they go Active or Alternative. Anything would be better than the extremely timid 250 song library of only the biggest hits that they're playing now.

Another mystery is why they play the Plain White T's "Hey There Deliliah" so often when it's clearly a Top 40 song. They did play "Time Is Running Out" back when they were officially deemed Alternative around '04 or so. The station is such a mess and, you're exactly right, it's library is about 200 songs (if that).
 
K-Rock2 online is pretty good, I wish the bitrate were higher. The alt sounds doesn't really mesh with O&A urban-decay, white-trash-South-Shore image however, so I don't expect any changes.
 
nope and their not transmitting their HD-2 channel either...
