An open question to on-air talents:

How do you deal with negative and inappropriate feedback from listeners, such as hate mail or other ways to pester you?

Some choose to ignore it, some choose to confront the listeners...How do YOU do it?

Air it out on your radio show! If you've got the snark, you can put them in their place. (And you can bet they'll be listening, regardless of how much they said they hate your show...)

I say, ignore it. If you let it bug you, then they win. If you don't, then you win.

depens on your format i think. If your a rocker like your name leads me to believe. Then i say create passion and debate whatever the point is ... I look at it like a game of "Can I change thier mind?" if not then piss them off .... if nothing else then it's fun and most of the time i can grab a topic from it at least a phoner. EVERYTHING IS SHOW PREP!

Just smile and tell them " I love you too, and thank you for your support". 8)

I can remember about 20 years ago on CBSFM where Cousin Brucie comes on; Brucie mentions that someone had called up (thank God Brucie didn't put the person on the air!! :)) and gone REALLY REALLY NEGATIVE about the station, ESPECIALLY DJ Gary Clark - so Cousin Brucie, bless his heart :), basically pulls a "Shatner on SNL" and tells the fan ON THE AIR to GET A LIFE!! I was like "Yeah, Brucie!!" Far as I'm concerned, that was a CLASSY way for a DJ to deal with someone like that....

After years of seeing jocks handle it both ways, ignore or deplore, I think the best way is to answer it with comedy. Why? Because I remember seeing Stephen Capen get a really hateful phone call. He had the caller on a speakerphone in the studio and the guy went on a rant, telling Capen what a jerk, etc. he was. Capen proceeded to answer with an angry, "oh YEAH? You think I'm a JERK? Well....you're RIGHT!" At which point, the listener totally cracked up. By the end of the call, the listener was a total fan because Capen just made him laugh.

SO, I think the best way is...make them laugh. Not worth it to make enemies, not in this biz. We are on the air to entertain. Many people don't know you and don't care, they are just pissed off people with no lives, so...they are just looking for someone/ANYONE to pick on and to pick a fight. But don't go to their level. Be above it. You should not take the attack personally. if not you, then they'd target someone else on the radio, right?

It's a real challenge to figure out ways to make pissed off angry listeners laugh, but trust me, if I can do it, so can you!

Seduce them.

LOL!! :) :) :) (usually works better if the listener is female and the air personality is male.... ;))

Says me indeed.... ;) ;) (I'm just stating it ALL from the perspective of one who KNOWS what she's talking about.... :) :) :))

I have an entire "Hate Mail" prod piece. All mail is good mail. Let it fly. Sometimes I correct grammar on-air, and grade the hate mail. If it's creative, I give them props.

That's me. I don't think there's a right answer to this.

Read it on the air, and of course, thank them for their time and attention.

Has anyone given thought to the possibility that the listener might be RIGHT??? WOW what a concept. After everything has settled down ask yourself WHY did I get that call.

If the irate listener is attacking the station or another on-air person, take the Cousin Brucie approach. If the listener is attacking you, take the "thanks for calling" approach, or if the situation allows, use comedy and get 'em laughing.

Continuing an arguement with them does not work.

Hey. if it weren't for those dumb listeners and those demanding advertisers, radio would be a really nice business.

now THAT's FUNNY! Lol

Take the O & A approach and put them on the air and let them say why they don't like you.

I think it's flattering that someone would take the time and energy out to let you know that you suck or they don't like what you're doing than just change the dial.

As O & A have always put listeners on the air that say that they suck and they want their music format back... It was brutal for them when they first hit the air at WNEW. Half the show was people telling them how much they hated them and calling them Dopie and Ain't Funny. And everytime they enter a new market they always put on the negative phone calls. The surprising thing is these listeners who claim to hate O & A so much keep listening. And keep calling. It becomes comical after a while. So take it as flattery that someone took so much time and effort to tell you that they don't like you because you obviously did something to get them to take such time and effort to let you know.
