An Ugly PIX-ture at 11

Why has no one picked up on this yet? According to the New York Post, the changes continue at WPIX: The station has shut down four departments, including human resources, research, and sports. Lolita Lopez has been reassigned, and the station wants to do away with union camera operators and go the "one-man/woman-band" route.

And, we may now know the real reason why Jim Watkins was demoted. More in this article, published on Monday.

The whole operation now screams "cheap," with production values lower than even what is associated with public-access television. It seems to underscore that there's more to owner Tribune's bankruptcy than just the financial end.

And to think this was the station that once boasted the likes of Pat Harper, Steve Bosh, Bill Jorgensen, Tim Malloy, Jeff Kamen, Frank Casey, Christy Ferer, Kristi Witker, Jerry Girard, Roberto Tirado, Bob Harris, Jeffrey Lyons . . . and going back, Marc Howard (before going on to a long career in Philly), Paul Bloom (before settling in San Diego) . . .

Furthermore, WPIX used to be the gold standard in independent television, with shows such as "The Magic Garden", "Officer Joe Bolton" and even documentaries (in 1960 they produced a doc about Adolf Hitler) -- even when it comes to syndicated programming, where they insisted on 35mm prints instead of 16mm.

Their insistence on 35mm prints also extended to the movies they ran, I.I.N.M. Oh, those were the days . . .

From gold standard to cheap zirconium in about one generation . . . :(

I used to enjoy WPIX .Its to bad to see PIX go south.Back in the 1980's and 1990's the channel was in my cable lineup along with WWOR 9 here in central Connecticut. The cable co later at the time deleted these channels.I wonder the lost of out of town cable subs had a impact on WPIX.
