An Urban FM in Knoxville....

Arbitron's market make up: Population: 684,700 (Black: 40,600) (Hispanic: 25,300), it would be hard. IMHO: It would have to a hybrid "Churban", even then if you have some success the two CHRs would react and "pick off" your best tunes.
 
I guess I'm the only "broadcaster" in the are who isn't absorbed by Hee-Haw reruns on RFD.

Allow me, if you will, to illuminate the query.

Hot 104.5.

It's an FM.

It's an urban.

It is an urban FM. In Knoxville. With ratings.

Kinda novel, huh?
 
A hard core Urban might be a hard sell in Knoxville. Especially with advertisers. Hot 104.5 is as close as you've had since WNOX-FM was owned by Dick Broadcasting and ran the format a while. Or the days of WBMK-AM.
 
Gee, that's funny. When I actually look at what charts Billboard reports, and what Hot 104.5 reports on their playlist,
it's kinda compelling.

They're an Urban station based upon their playlist. I guess I"m the only one here who isn't working for the weekend, when my shift starts.
 
What IS the difference between 'Urban' and 'Rhythmic CHR' (or whatever it's supposed to be called) anyway? Serious question.

Actually, the urban format on WNOX 99.1 ("X99") in the mid 90's was before Dick Broadcasting owned the station. It was owned by Chuck Ketron at that time, and I worked there thru 3 different formats (country>smooth jazz>then urban). The urban format was actually the most successful. But even then, we all knew that the station really needed to be rhythmic CHR for this market. We were only Urban AC in most dayparts because that was what was available on satellite and we didnt have the money to be local all day or do local automation. Before 99.1 was sold to Dick Broadcasting, the plan was to eventually automate locally (as hard drives were really just coming into play then), and go more upbeat as a rhythmic CHR. Which is what we already did during live shifts.

Urban is geared towards blacks, as rhythmic is for whites and Hispanics. While both share many songs, rhythmic music tend to draw upbeat music from the pop charts and have slightly more leeway in what they can play. They can play Taylor Swift; urban won't.
 
In an ideal situation Churban would be my pick to musically program over Urban or CHR. You would have "freedom" to pick the best of Urban, CHR , and even a hot AC song occasionally, if it fits. You would just have to stay away from the hard core rap and the "pre-teen" CHR.
