Analog *almost* gone in DFW

In January K25FW applied for and was granted a CP to convert to digital.

DFW has been down to three analog stations for some time now: KZFW/6, K25FW/25, and KLEG/44. KLEG has had a CP to convert to digital since last August but hasn't gone through with it yet.

Once those two convert, that'll leave just KZFW, which is pretty much a LPFM radio station at this point. The audio is usually a simulcast of KPFW/61.1, but for some time the video has been just a placard showing their call letters and telling viewers to tune their FM radios to 87.7 to receive the audio!

Interestingly, KZFW had toyed with the idea of converting to digital. They first applied to move their analog facilities downtown and put up a smallish digital station east of Dallas, but never followed through. They later applied for a straight flash-cut, but got rejected by the FCC (on apparently erroneous interference grounds) and never refiled. It appears they've decided to keep the analog station for the time being.

For a LPFM, their signal is really strong because I can receive their signal in Decatur.

I'd wager we'll never see that built. If the sale of KLDT/54 goes through, Azteca would likely move that facility, thus making KLEG/44 unnecessary.

KUVN-CA is the only nugget left up after all this LPDTV mess happens. What will happen to them?

They applied to flash-cut to digital in August 2008, but the FCC hasn't done anything with their application yet. So they'll probably switch someday, but it's probably not imminent.

A question I raise is what purpose KUVN-CA serves? At one time, the KUVN/23 stick was off Plano Road, near the Garland border. It didn't have a lot of height so KUVN likely was signal challenged in Tarrant County.

But KUVN has been out at Cedar Hill for quite some time now. Thus there's no longer a need for a repeater in Ft. Worth.

I agree, KUVN is 1000 kW's of power now, and at a 93 in Decatur and likely a 100 in Ft. Worth. What's the point?

K25FW just filed an amendment to their CP. It looks like the only change is they decided to go for the full 15 kW instead of only 8 kW, which will push HSN (and whatever else they decide to broadcast) even further out into the metroplex.

Why doesn't these LP's become repeaters for RTV or .2 Network or TheCOOLTV? They're broadcasting a senseless load of crap.

K25FW is actually an HSN O&O station, if I recall correctly.

Yes it is. The applicant is listed as VENTANA TELEVISION, INC. at ONE HSN DRIVE in St. Petersburg, FL. I presume their flagship is W40CU-D in that market.

BTW, here in D/FW, HSN used to have a full-power 5 MW facility. It was KHSX on 49, now Univision's KSTR (Telefutura).

Since K25FW does already have a cable slot, I'd surmise they have no real sense of urgency in getting the digital plant on the air. Was 15 kW amendment to the CP just to buy some extra time?

Amendments don't extend permits, they just amend existing permits. Besides, their permit is good until 2013 anyway.

They've lit up two of their low-powered digital stations so far to my knowledge, the one in Tampa and the one in Pensacola.

Their amendment has been approved. They can now flip to a 15 kW digital signal.

Anyone have an idea if/when they'll follow through?
