Anchor changes at NBC 5 Dallas

We knew it was gonna happen ... and now it has: Jane McGarry is off the 10 p.m. news. She now anchors at 5 and 6 p.m. with Mike Snyder, and Meredith Land slides into the 10 p.m. seat next to Brian Curtis. Jane tells Uncle Barky she's not angry, that she didn't want to do an on-air farewell (her last late newscast was apparently Thursday) and that she has some new project in the works, but offers scant few details. The budget cuts at KXAS continue ... Snyder and McGarry demoted; Higgins and Miller booted. Who's next?

Not Finfrock....right.....? Of course whoever thought KRLD would ax Brad Barton? :-[

Channel 5 at 4:00 is terrible IMHO. After a couple of news clips, they have "news you can use." Little infomercials about local companies and the products/services they offer. How much are they making on that?

Apparently, a fair amount. We have so many of these "lifestyle"-type shows (some under the guise of newscasts) in Phoenix. The ABC affiliate runs "Sonoran Living" (60 mon lifestyle); the NBC affiliate has "12 News Valley Dish" (30 mins on food and dining); The CBS affiliate run "Better Arizona" (part of the Better shows nationwide); The FOX affiliate does some during "FOX 10 Arizona Morning" (how else do you fill 5 hours); and The ind Belo station does "Lifestyles A To Z, Shopping A To Z, and some on "Good Morning Arizona").

The ONLY time I watch Channel 5 is when I want to watch Law and Order. I have never been impressed with their newscast in the 20 years I've lived in the metroplex. It is just a horrible TV station overall.

Ah, for the days of Brad Wright and Alyce Caron. :D

Actually, KXAS/5 reminds me more of a small-market station more and more these days. I fully expect some ex-Waco or Abilene anchor to come in and take over Snyder or McGarry's seat. They'd certainly be cheaper, and probably have just as much credibility.

And who can forget the LEGENDARY Harold Taft on weather? ;)

Almost...wasn't it 1991?

In our household, we still fondly remember Harold...weather dials, 48 hour forecasts (no gimmicky 5/7/10 day forecasts), made all incoming KXAS meteorologists pass a test, no nonsense.

I can still hear him saying, "Outside, 52 degrees, winds out of the...uhh...let's call it...SE...at about 10mph...barometric pressure...at 29.92. Well, it's 39 over in Amarilla..."

And Bill Mack on WBAP introducing Harold Taft's forecasts with ``...the world's greatest weatherman...''.
