.....and meanwhile in Point Roberts.......

CBUX and CBUF are entirely French.

CHKG is (now) 100% Chinese AC. It used to air 3pm to 6am. Now it's 24/7. I miss the Bollywood and Caribbean music.

CKYE is 100% South Asian.

CHMB 1320 is 100% Chinese

CJRJ 1200 is 100% South Asian

CJVB 1470, CFRO have scattered offerings in multiple languages

Thank you for clearing that up! The question now.. what is the next station in the lower mainland to make a format flip to another language of programming? I think it could happen soon

I was driving back from Seattle and heard "Treasure" Bruno Mars on KWYZ.

Did they go CHR?

Nope. Just a unusual add in the K-Pop heavy Radio Hankook playlist.....

The biggest Vancouver owners (Corus, Bell, Rogers, Jim Pattison, NewCap) would NEVER switch ANY of their stations to a multi-cultural. They're not huge ratings getters (It's been said there are more people who work at these stations than those actually listening to them.)

The CRTC however makes decisions based on "underserved" populations. However I'm not understanding all these South Asian groups applying. We have 1 AM & 1 FM in Vancouver, plus two border blasters. And if Sher-E-Punjab gets 107.7, will they cease broadcasting on 1550? I have my doubts, seeing as they invested MEGA-BUCKS in changing KRPI's COL and new transmitting facility. If they are successful with the FM license, it would make history as the first international AM/FM sister combo on American/Canadian soil.

Not true Bongwater. The multilingual stations around here have a huge following, but because they don't subscribe to the PPM's we'll never know how they would have fared in the ratings. I recall reading a story last year that stated RED FM (CKYE) would likely be in the #3 or #4 position in the Vancouver PPM's if they actually subscribed. I believe that as you literally hear that station everywhere you go around here.

Also as the rules stand now: Corus, Bell, Rogers, Pattison, etc. would have to apply for a specialty FM license if they wanted to flip any of their existing FM stations to a multilingual format (which would mean sacrificing a non-restrictive license).

My bad then. I have heard CHKG and CKYE a few times blasting out of other radios. But since they never show up in the Vancouver ratings, I never thought they were THAT huge.

I worked at KARI (550 AM) Blaine in 1966. It was a new station at the time, ran religious programming, the 5 kw signal covered a good portion of its target... the Vancouver BC market.

90% of our revenue came from preachers across the border.

Everything old is new again, just more of it.

Hey guys thank you for the information. I am always curious about this stuff. Bongwater, I bet Dan is correct, as I have heard CKYE and CHKG blasting out of radios in various parts of Vancouver. Particularly in Surrey, Richmond, and Abbotsford, all which have significant multicultural communities. I dont know if the border blasters do all that well, but I bet that CKYE, CHKG, and CJRJ all would be near the top of the PPM ratings.

Actually, CHKG stilll have to play other languages between 6am-3pm due to CTRC requirement. They tried to put Chinese in the AM, but the CTRC rejected the application. However, their AM counterpart is nearly 100% Chinese, except for the prime time area and all day sunday.

Well that's what I get for not paying attention......

And Lady B still does Swaraj Radio....Tuning in now....Thanks!

I wonder if any of these radio stations have any listenership from people in Seattle/Washington...

It is a little comical that the COL of all of these border blaster stations contain no real population for the station to be serving. Yet, they have to be the ones to deal with any radiation, or RF interference.

I always felt bad that little KRPA 1110am in Oak Harbour flipped to multicultural programming. That was a nice little community station, and it doesnt really serve as a border blaster as it is.

I could never figure out the logic behind KRPA 1110 flipping to South Asian. It's 500 watt signal is barely audible in the Vancouver area in the first place. Add in the the splatter from CKWX 1130 and you basically have an unlistenable station in the very area that they are targeting. KRPA does have a decent signal in the Victoria area, but the South Asian population in that city is miniscule.

There was some speculation last year that Satnam Media had plans to move the station closer to the border, perhaps to Sumas or Everson to target the large South Asian population in Abbotsford, but nothing seems to have developed with that.

Dan -
Are there any radio stations that are trying to target the multicultural population Abbotsford or the Fraser Valley? Or do most listners in the eastern lower mainland have easy access to the stations available in Vancouver?

Does Vancouver have a significantly larger Asian population than Seattle? If not, then why are there no Asian formats in this market except for 1230?

Bob -
It depends on where you are in the Vancouver area. Surrey, British Columbia has a multicultural majority. Not to mention, Richmond, BC does as well. To answer your question, I would say yes.

Other than a few hours of South Asian programming per week on college station CIVL 101.7 in Abbotsford all the other stations in the Fraser Valley are 100% English. 93.1 and 96.1 put out pretty decent signals out this way, but 1200, 1320, and 1470 leave a lot to be desired (especially at nights). Surprisingly the cleanest ethnic AM stations are 1550 and 1600.

The ethnic breakdown really does vary from city to city. In Surrey the Punjabi (South Asian) population sits around 30%, Abbotsford is in the 20% range, while in the city of Vancouver itself that figure sits at 6%. However the city of Vancouver's Chinese population is over 30%. Without looking it up I would guess that we beat Seattle by a landslide.

I'm sure Seattle proper has a sizable Korean population. But KWYZ and KSUH's signals completely miss most of Seattle and Bellevue and are heard mostly in Everett, Tacoma and the North/South Seattle suburbs. If 1460 ever goes up for sale, this would fill in the gap almost perfectly.

Dan -
I noticed on radio locator that most of the AM stations in Vancouver don't reach that far east. Every time I have driven out to Abbotsford, I have been able to pick everything on the AM and FM band just fine. However once I rounded to corner into Chilliwack, the FM signals began getting pretty weak.

I discovered an updated story from the South Delta Leader about the KRPI tower controversy:
http://www.southdeltaleader.com/news/224313151.html

Nothing all that much different from the original Delta Optimist article posted back in August except for the fact that I was quite surprised to see our good friend Andy Skotdal mentioned as an engineering consultant for KRPI.

Why not? If anyone has first hand experience dealing with all the problems associated with erecting towers it's most definitely Andy.

I would have thought the last thing he'd want is ANOTHER migraine headache after everything he went through with KRKO/KKXA.

But I guess he's proof what doesn't kill you makes you stronger......
