And People Wonder Why RXP Is Failing...

Most of the more "aesthetic" (dont know what else to call it) formats (AAA, Jack) have a better chance at suceeding in smaller (Northampton, Portland, ME, Burlington VT) markets where there is "less on the line"...and fewer stations (less fragmentation of the local advertising dollar). Lets face it, the suits that own these radio stations have very little tolerance for risk these days. The idea of a MAJOR FM station in the NYC area with a playlist of Vampire Weekend, New Pornographers etc...would probably scare the higher ups. The crime of NYC radio is that there is such a large market, yet the owners of these stations believe that that they should serve to appeal to the masses...period. This isnt hard to figure out...
Much of the AAA format is out of the realm for most people..sad but true. Yes, even in NYC (and area)...whose citizens are often "presumed" to be more sophisticated than most. We have WRSI up here in the Pioneer Valley...would NYC radio ever support something like that? I doubt it. RXP is proof...

RXP can hardly be classified as AAA though. Not when they play 80s hair metal, nu-metal and lots of classic rock. They really can't be classified as anything, to be honest, and that's their downfall.

That would mean that they are rock-n-roll JACK. See CBS-FM

That's a good way of putting it. The station is a total mishmash and can't hope to attract large numbers in this way. RXP has created a facade of being an "eclectic" station, with Matt Pinfield "choosing" the music during the morning show, playing some deep or local tracks, etc., but it just doesn't mesh well together. Not when that deep or local track is followed by "Stairway to Heaven" or Linkin Park's "In the End." The station could still be "eclectic" and feature deep tracks or local artists, but with a more consistent sound to it. They're all over the place now, which is why they're battling with the other train wreck, K-Rock, for the bottom of the NYC ratings pie.

it's the ultimate revenge of the NY punk scene; when that was never given it's 'day in court' at radio, the entire audio timeline for 'rock' radio veered off the train tracks, and is now the train wreck it deserves to be....

The phones are lit non-stop and from my NYC source the PPM data is great. The proof will be released soon.
