Alert: Katz Cuts Workforce

The Clear Channel-owned national rep firm will dismiss 122 people across all divisions, mainly among its sales force. According to sources, the steep decline in national advertising combined with a two-year build up of salespeople was an unprofitable combination for the division.

I think that this is more due to Katz absorbing a bunch of Interep groups and sellers and doing the consolidation there. Remember, Interep went bankrupt and was liquidated.

That's true, but don't fool yourself. CC will make cuts in sales. When sales are down, and they have WAY over-saturated the markets with sellers, they will make cuts. It would be better to have 10 sales people who can handle a bunch of clients and know what they are doing than have 7 who are good and 10 who are working their first sales job and are going to quit after their 3 months of guarantee is up.

There have been a lot of rumors in the trade media lately about when and how deep CC layoffs were gonna be.

So far, all those rumors have been wrong. Someone Radio Info readers are familiar with even got wrong the number of days that the CC GM meetings were gonna last ... a number of times.

Katz hired maybe a couple dozen people from Interep. Nowhere close to 122.

But upon consolidation and creating essentially the RAB of rep firms, lessened competion suggests lessend competitive staffing.

Why don't they cann a few dozen GMs? That'd get everything back on track. Oh, but that would be unheard of & make too much sense. I once worked at a station that went GMless for over a year & it was smooth sailing. Infact we all should've got profit sharing & got what the GM would've gotten. Yeah right. ::)
