And so...

We're now in March and it appears that the tragedy at KDND has all but been forgotten on this board.

Just as I predicted.

The machine rolls on.

..but seriously. Any update?

Why give Neanderpaul such a hard time? It sounds like snide school yard banter. Seriously... you may not agree with his previously stated opinions but that doesn't mean he isn't concerned about this tragedy any less than you.

Neaderpaul, nothing has been making headlines. It would appear that things are being handled quietly out of the public eye at this point. I could be wrong, though. Maybe someone in the Madison building can shed some light?

Taking Stock...

Let's see where things stand a month after the "Wii" contest...

How's their morning show doing? Oh, wait, what morning show...

How about their new OM? PD?

Promotions?

Contests?

Spotload?

Dare I mention ratings?

Even their webcam is blank, and stuck on "Tuesday, Jan 16 12:/15:12 2007"

Yeah, everything is just swell at The End. Ask Alecia how excited she is that she moved across the country 8 months ago to take this gig.

Entercom is just trying to stay under the national media radar. Any changes at "The End" would spark another flurry of media attention, so they're not going to do anything right now. The courts are moving at their typical glacial speed, so what would you expect to be new? Did you think that Mancow would make a local appearance to highlight his "crusade"? Yeah, he's really putting effort into that, isn't he.

The most telling response will be from the audience. Let's see what news March 13th brings.

The only thing I can notice, other than a severe cut back on live breaks, is that they are supposedly allowing listeners to be guest djs for one hour each weekday morning at 7am. Is this their way of trying to reconnect with the community? Cut corners? Avoid having to produce a typical morning show?

Another avoidance of the question.

Perhaps that's why this topic went away. Because you have nothing to add?

I'd personally like to know if anyone has spoken to any of the principles involved, and how they're holding up. But, my concern is ridiculed and negated by those with exposed nerves who would rather create conflict than discuss a seemingly relevant topic.

It's fine. Go back to your world. Pardon my intrusion.

Thanks for the information. Appreciated.

Forgotten? I Don't Think So

I don't think that anybody expected this story to stay on the front page forever. Is it over? Not by a long shot.

Is it over at "The End"? Not until they stop running with a skeleton crew and decide to either blow it up or rebuild it.

Is it over for the people who got fired, and may be under investigation? Have any of them been hired for another radio job?

Is it over for the family of Jennifer Strange?

Has it fundamentally changed broadcasting? Well, our company has new procedures - and a new set of forms - required for contests. Anything out of the ordinary has to be approved at corporate. Even some ordinary contests have to be approved at corporate.

The story will be back when there's something new to report - like ratings, court action, an out-of-court settlement, or action by the FCC.

Like Yogi said, "It ain't over 'til it's over."

This sounds similar to what Channel 104.9 is doing in the Bay Area...only they're doing it with a mobile vehicle rather than having the "dj's" come in. All these companies are trying to "play what we want" i.e. Jack, Max (oops, he was eaten by the Wolf), Bob, Jill... kudos to the End for letting listeners play what they want.

I have heard from some of those involved...they are not doing well. Finding employment is difficult for them, when everyone in the industry - not just radio but entertainment - is familiar with what happened. Time for a career change for them.

You wont see any big changes in the station any time soon...the holes are being filled in by other entercom employees. I doubt anything will happen until long after the legal issues have been settled.

KDND's new PD: Dan Mason

Well, KDND did get a new PD. It's (no kidding) "The Notorious D.A.N" Dan Mason, formerly at WMME-FM "The Moose" in Augusta, Maine and for a cup of coffee at Y-100 in Miami.

He was the first PD at WAKS-FM in the Cleveland market (it started at rimshot FM/104.9 in suburban Lorain, then was involved in a massive format/freq swap in July 2001... and just happened to land on one of the most powerful signals in town, 50kW FM/96.5 in Akron) and was there for six-plus years. When he started there, WAKS was all-automated in a tiny studio that previously hosted a long-gone and sold-off sports talk station... albeit at the Tower City Centre in downtown Cleveland (since vacated).

Since then, the station has been one of the few - if not the ONLY - bright spot in CC/Cleveland. While not the dominant station in the cluster (in reality, it's oldies WMJI... which has been badly pared back in recent years and is nothing compared to its' past), it gets good ratings and revenue nonetheless.

So it wouldn't take Monk to figure out that Dan being hired by Entercom likely means that they WILL stick with Top 40 on the frequency. Perhaps under new positioners, imaging and call letters... as it should be, IMHO. There's nothing to speak of that he's had any experience programming a classic rock or a country format ;) And he will likely be on-air (as he was at WAKS), so that fills one of the empty air slots then and there.

Either way, he need all the luck in the world, as this is a gig I WOULDN'T want at all.
