CBS 19 introduces ‘Stormy' the weather dog

Special to the Progress

Just a little over two months ago, a little pup was found abandoned along a road near Lindale. Today he is one of stars of CBS 19's evening newscasts. Stormy The Weather Dog will begin appearing on CBS 19's 5, 6 and 10pm newscasts along with Chief Meteorologist Doc Deason, Nov. 3.

During the 5 p.m. newscast, Stormy's wardrobe will help Deason deliver his nightly weather forecast to viewers. If the weather dog is wearing a sweater, viewers will know they are in store for a cool weather forecast. If Stormy is dressed in a parka, those tuning in will know it is time to bundle up.

At 6 and 10 p.m. the dog will at times accompany the CBS 19 meteorologist as he delivers his weathercast. At the end of the weather segment, Stormy will emerge from his doghouse to push a button to activate his evening “Dog Walking Forecast.” This will inform viewers graphically what the weather will be like as they take an evening stroll with their own pampered pet.

Stormy was rescued by CBS 19 General Manager Phil Hurley from the Smith County Humane Society shelter. The idea to save a dog came to Hurley after he saw a station news report about the startling number of animals being destroyed each day at the shelter.

The thought to take Stormy to air as part of the weather team was formulated by Hurley after he saw Houston's NBC television station, KPRC, make a similar move. He hopes Stormy's adoption will encourage others to save the life of a dog while at the same time publicizing the good work of the Humane Society. Hurley plans to use the weather dog in future fundraisers for the shelter.

In October, nearly 3000 viewers voted in CBS 19's Name the Dog contest. When the voting ended, the "four legged forecaster" had been given the name Stormy by local dog lovers. Since then, the weather dog has had the run of CBS 19 studios as he awaits his daily obedience schooling from a Petsmart trainer. Petsmart is donating veterinary care, training, grooming, food, clothing and quarters for Stormy.

Stormy is available for public appearances with Doc Deason for you local civic clubs and events by calling CBS 19's Community Relations Director, Jeradee Zips at 903-581-2211 or emailing her at [email protected].

I knew there would have to be a Humane Society tie-in somehow...

A push-button forecast? Sweaters? Parkas? The pooch will pant profusely underneath the protruding lights, positively. :)

And of course not a moment too soon for sweeps. But will it last.

As long as Stormy is potty trained, there shouldn't be any worries....

At least he's crediting KPRC ... this is a blatant ripoff, down to the dog pushing a button to unveil the "Dog Walking Forecast." Thankfully Frank Billingsley, KPRC's chief met, doesn't dress Radar, the station's weather dog. I should also mention KPRC has a new GM and the dog's presence has been minimalized in a very big way. He's now only on at the very end of the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts, where he used to be on every afternoon show during just about every weather hit ... unless there was something serious going on.

The novelty of Stormy's prognosticating will hit hard and trail off rather quickly. Viewers will take a look for a week or so, then say, "Oh, that again." There may be a bit of a short term ratings bump during sweeps, but, as much as people like dogs, the phenomenon of Stormy isn't likely to last. A ratings stunt of short term interest but not that big a deal.

Perhaps they could get the "Target" dog to guest star or sponsor, maybe bring in Lassie during Thanksgiving week.:)

The real losers in this arent the viewers or station, its the homeless dogs and cats if this "stunt" goes belly up. Instead of making this a dog a circus seal, bring on animals from the local rescue shelter and find them good homes.

You have nailed it. Were it that more of the animals that will be euthanized could benefit from this literal dog and pony show. Channel 7 (at least last time I checked) does a pet of the week on Friday afternoons with a live shot of an animal up for adoption and the few minutes devoted to animal welfare have worked extremely well. That's how I got my current dog, and a cat, and both have been miraculous finds.

So, yes, definitely, CBS 19 would do well to further its mission in the animal shelter project by taking on an advocacy role for a larger part of the homeless animal community. Stormy will no doubt be in good hands, even if he has an accident on the studio floor next to Camera 1, but the animal tie-in needs to go beyond just one animal.

Not meaning to get maudlin about this, but there's no doubt a mountain of fervent agreement with the sentiment expressed in the previous post about who are the real winners and losers in this matter.

Add me to the chorus. Some of the best pets ,easy to train, love and be loved back are at the shelters. I volunteer with Operation Rescue, and have donated to many no-kill shelters.

Operation Rescue you say, you picket the womens clinics I see ;) I know you meant kindness, I will refrain from my comments about OK, as I disagree on their handling of a recent situation in my personal dealings with an animal. I myself donate to smaller rescue organizations who dont have a certain "jock" on the board if you catch my drift, as well as the SPCA Of North Texas.

There is an Operation Kindness and a Operation Rescue which handles Wildlife like racoons, beavers, etc. Nice organization. Operation Kindness is not bad, even though "he"sits on the board. I have had good dealings with them.

I did my research on the other OR, good group of people who work with wild animals in need. I still stand by my statements about Kindness, theres other organizations here in the area who do a far better job but receive less press.
