AND THE NEW KBSG PD IS...

KBSG Giving away $1000! Be the first one to call in when we flip format and win!!!! Be listening for that last song today! (this is just a joke, I don’t think they are running this promotion…but maybe they should).

Interesting to note that KBSG is playing some of the last tunes heard on KIRO AM back in 74 (I think it was 74) when they (KIRO) flipped to News Radio.

Any one remember what KIRO’s last song was before they flipped way back in the early 70’s? Any one remember how they flipped was it the middle of day or over the weekend. I almost remember they flipped after the weekend and started on a Monday. I was about eleven at the time and kinda foggy on how that went down. I do know it was a big deal though.

KBSG Classic KIRO from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s????

So there you have it one good promotion idea and a format for the station,
Classic KIRO-FM.

For the record, KIRO-AM was playing AC music during middays well into the 1980's.

KIRO 710 am switched to news talk in the early to mid 70's. Their FM might have been ding AC, but the AM flipped and no longer played music as a format in the early mid 70's.

I do know my history. Do you? KIRO played songs during the middays in between news and interview segments in the 1980's.

Jim French may beg to differ!

Why would he beg to differ? The songs played on his show!

KBSG has already changed formats. Anyone tune in lately? Foreigner? Fleetwood Mac? They've departed from their oldies roots no matter what they say.

Bob Kaake will get them back on course with his AC background.

I wonder why he took an interim position? I bet he's long term but they have to do a search for EEO purposes.

Well yes I guess if you count the bumper music that KIRO plays, they still play music. But I can tell you the station no longer banked on a MUSIC format when they flipped to news talk in the 70’s. They no longer processed the station audio for Music. They loved the sound of that Volumax on Voice. Saw no need to use tri-band processing for along time. KIRO was not what I would consider a Music station when they went into the talk direction.

Searadiofreak you make it sound like they were still playing in the music format world in the 80’s. They were not. They used the music as bumper music. They still do that today. Dave Ross plays his music on air but I don’t consider that to qualifying KIRO as a music station.

KIRO AM made a definitive format change in the early 70’s to News Talk. The first 2 years were a little tough but since then it has been their bread and butter format.

Prove me wrong when did KIRO change from Music personality to Talk Personality. When did KIRO stop banking on playing Music and started talking? I thought it was the early to mid 70’s (74 I think). I know when they bought there new transmitter in 1976 they weren’t interested in how it would make the music sound. When Continental Electronics came out with the modulation clipper in the 317-c they did not use it to make the music sound better. They used it to punch the voice up.

How many format changes has KIRO AM been through since 1970?
And were they actual format changes or adjustments to the news/talk format they have had since they changed from a music personality station in the 70’s

xmtrland, maybe we are talking about apples and oranges. Yes, KIRO switched to an all-news format in 1974. "Newsradio 7" was how they idenitified it at first.

But you said that the "last" KIRO songs were played in the mid-70's. That is incorrect.

What I am talking about was during the midday shows (Yes, Jim French), in the early to mid-80's they played several, if not more full AC songs per hour in between news and interview segments. I even have a tape of French introducing a song during this era. They were not "bumpers". I also wrote a letter to the PD of KIRO at the time asking about this, because at the time I didn't care for it. The PD wrote back and said they were looking at refining the midday show and thanked me for my comments.

Huh? By what you say of an "AC background" (which is not in dispute), that would make it seem like they'll tilt MORE towards Foreigner and Fleetwood Mac

Were he to stay long-term, he'd likely injure his back by trying to re-arrange the deck chairs.
