And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

Keepin' the thread goin' As we approach Friday afternoon (and the WEEKEND), I remember Wet Willie's tune of the same name... So I went to the archives of 45's in the dungeon and next to that record was another Wet Willie "stiff" (can I use Wet Willie and Stiff in the same sentence?): From 1978, peaking at #30.... Street Corner Serenade

Always thought Wet Willie's "Keep on Smilin'" was a great Finally Friday weekend song. Here's another contribution for thread-momentum: Split Enz, "I Got You" (different from James Brown's classic of nearly the same name.) Limited edition promo copies of this LP have the Split Enz logo etched in the vinyl. Looks very cool when spinning on the Technics SL-1200MK2.

Rox and Silkie dipping into the 60s Pop genre with two upbeat Forgotten 45s, which brought to mind this upbeat tune from the early 70s, "Yellow River" by Christie. Savor the day!

As I was perusing the stiffs, a song started playing in my head, but I couldn't remember the artist. Even my initial Google search left me high & dry. Then, it came to me:

I submit to you this relic from 1968 by the New Colony Six:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHHnUHLRrS4

The real stiff from the New Colony Six was I Will Always Think About You... a followup that strangely I liked even more....it can be found on the "related videos" side bar on the same page.

Another one.....Fever by the McCoys

There were a couple of acts who only identified themselves using one letter. Most people remember the classic "Pop Musik" from 1979 by the group M! But how many remember a song that barely cracked the top 40 in 1977 called "Dancing Man" by Q?

Let's roll the jingle......
1968 Number 78....

United by The Music Makers. Part 1 & 2
on Gamble records. Not to be confused with the Intruders
version of United.

The 31 pages is the impressive part - lotsa content! The views however click up everytime it's looked at (I'm sure all participants know this ;D. I've added 2 views just now, click in - click out, click in - click out) I noticed that when I figured you were "stuffing the ballot box" for your award last week!!

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to check each and every topic on RI Boards. My suggestion is to first locate all the news about hardships people have endured in radio, corporations tanking, networks in trouble, and then consider the subject title of this particular thread. Now that you have seen this as a reply to your post you just read it again. Thank you for voting three times - do come again. ::)

[/quote]Surely you jest. In red ink, no less. When I figure out exactly what was meant by your reply ???, I'll consider your suggestion. (help anyone?) Certainly there is room for a little levity on the boards. If anyone took personal offense to the post, I apologize . For certain, it wasn't to ruffle feathers. This thread, does in fact, contain a plethora of content (which was the opener to the post), and will undoubtedly continue to click up entries.

We're resurrecting long-lost songs on a thread started by a Polish painter on a beer-soaked Saturday night. Can anyone take ANY of this "seriously"?

I thought my post was rather humorous, actually. But I resurrected an old TV show. TFWG has over 46,000 views and something like 550 pages of posts.

There's also "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" (the Beatles song) by The Silkie.
.

Well, yes, there is that too, which The Big A noted when I made my very first posts. It is just difficult to hide all those feathers. Have you ever seen a Silkie bird? Just for show. Very pretty birds, but also pretty goofy looking too. But it is a good song, whether you are listening to The Beatles or The Silkie.

Jim's post about Split Enz' "I Got You" adds another dimension to the mix: songs that got high rotation as videos on MTV, but relatively few spins on radio station turntables. In the case of Split Enz, there was not only "I Got You" but a song called "Dirty Creature" that would fit the category.

And then there was their non-US hit "Six Months in a Leaky Boat"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar7DgREshAk

...which strangely returned to our family home when it was redone by The Wiggles, with Tim Finn of Split Enz participating!

Some of Split Enz morphed into Crowded House, which found considerably more success in the US.

A clip that was in very high rotation on MTV (when they actually played videos that is) was the rather ubiquitous "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners. I believe that they were a one-hit wonder of the purest form-- does anyone even remember the name of the follow up single? There had to be one given that "Come On Eileen" was an international number one...
