And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

Because You demanded it! Well, you suggested it. Wait, maybe I suggested it. Merciful mother, I've bamboozled myself!

After arduously reviewing 112 pages, I present: The nominations for The Stiffies as culled from the good, the bad and the ugly. From the humorous, interesting and informative to the utterly inane and ponderous (much like my uncle Oscie, aunts Helen and Sophie.) The nominations take into consideration the songs, artists and bands and the posters.

So, as Emerson, Lake & Palmer once sang, "From the Beginning."

Wow-somebody has too much time on his hands!
And it's not me, so I'm not going though all the posts to see if this one has been mentioned yet:

Avenging Annie by Andy Pratt.

I'd been wondering a few weeks if anyone mentioned it, but here goes:
Haven't heard it since the last time I must have heard it on WLS AM in the 70's and it was a "Big Hit", but gone gone very stiff.

Jesus Christ Superstar.

The original show cast recording....went way up on the charts, and after it went down, it has
"never" been heard again on the air.

What to call such a tune that burns out SO quickly?
Is it a stiff, or does it define a new category, "Songs that defy longevity"?

Love that tune. Sounded great coming out of CKLW's TOTH jingle! There were quite a few religious-themed singles in the early 1970s. Do you think they don't "test" well? Or are broadcasters afraid of them? (I have no idea myself). I will say this: the less often you hear an oldie (like "Superstar"), the MORE it brings back a flood of memories. On the other hand, when I hear "Twist And Shout", it reminds me of no year in particular...it never "went away".

In the same vein of 70s religious hits that haven't been heard since the 70s would be Sister Janet Mead's "The Lord's Prayer". I'll be even Legends doesn't play that one! :)

Murray Head ("One Night in Bangcock") and the Trinidad Singers did the vocals on the original show cast recording, then there was the 1973 movie, which featured Carl Anderson ("Friends and Lovers") as Judas. Yvonne Elliman played Mary Magdalene in both the Broadway and film versions.

Ain't it the truth/? Ain't it the truth\!

Now if jus' every body knew how to hum "Serutan Yob" ( "Nature's Boy" backwards ) as sung by Red Ingle and the
Unnatural Seven, this'd be a perfec' world.

How 'bout that "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers?
Can't stop humming that either.
One of the songs I love to hear right after a really depressing Henry Rollins ( Black Flag ) kind of song.

Forty years ago. The opening track of the band's debut LP. It stiffed as a single, peaking at #80 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but was one of the best tracks on the album. Especially befitting the change to Standard Time, I submit Led Zeppelin's seminal "Good Times, Bad Times."

From about the same year as "Good Times, Bad Times", another song that got lots of airplay then TOTAL oblivion:

The Overture from Tommy by The Assembled Multitude.

I might already have noted this one:

Will You Be Staying After Sunday - The Peppermint Rainbow

Yes! A new game. Stump the Painter. Mention a stiffie and see if it's already been used. ;) I am impressed by the stiffie list and honored to have been included... :)

Same here.

"Make Believe" by Wind '68?
----------------
--and what was that song by The Arbors?
----------------
"Evry Day I Have To Cry Some" - Steve Alaimo '63. (cheerful song, sad title)
----------------
"Pin A Medal on Joey" - James Darren

I was in a grocery store this evening, and the in-store music system coulda been doin' a "Stiffs Just Keep On Comin' Weekend." Radknowski should have been doing the backsells along with the treasures to be found in the produce aisle.

Most notable: Tommy Roe: "Jam Up and Jelly Tight." In my callow teenage naivete I never got the salaciousness of that one.
