I took advantage of the miraculous internet and listened to a few bootlegged Grease Band solo songs, found them to sound rather like The Band.

Was this on purpose?
 
It probably was done on purpose, as well as the name. Yes, they did sound like The Band, especially in the cut "Jesse James". Those were very interesting times FM radiowise, with jocks playing whatever they felt like hearing. I wonder if something like that could ever work again.
 
The reference to "Jesse James" reminded me of a couple of songs. I don't know if they were stiffs, but they certainly are "lost classics"...

"Walk Away" and "Funk 49" from The James Gang.
 
Yet another Saturday night (and I ain't got nobody... your choice, the legendary Sam Cooke or Cat Stevens, aka Yusuf Mohammed) of deep reflection on the Stiff Of The Weekend, Forgotten 45 or whatever this thread has come to mean... a song that caught your ear that hasn't been heard in a while. Tooooo-night, it's "13 Questions" by Seatrain. Don't know where first I heard this song, but I believe it was played in Buffalo on WYSL and WKBW.
 
Rox, your Funk 49 reference made me think of the 70's Grand Funk Railroad. The word railroad made me think the old standard I've Been Working on the Railroad, which made me think of another oldie from that era, My Darling Clementine which has "Dwelt a miner forty niner, And his daughter Clementine. Oh my darling, oh my darling, ..." which brings us right back to Funk 49.

Which makes me think: was it Donnie Iris that sung "They're Coming to Take Me Away"?
 
They're coming to take me away was not a song but a novelty narrative by Napoleon XIV which was released in 1966. What's interesting is that the flip side was the narrative in reverse.
 
Donnie Iris did Love Is Like A Rock and Ah Leah. Iris was the lead singer of a group known as The Jaggerz which had a moderate hit with The Rapper (he's stuck in the crapper... you know what he's after...) Great song for mangled lyrics.

KB indeed played 13 Questions...also Song of Job from that first album (it was FUN being a MD back in those days).

Element 9: Trivia: The Jaggerz morphed into Hot Chocolate (You Sexy Thing). Betcha didn't know that! ::)

DB, I know you spent some time in Pittsburgh so maybe you know the story.  But checking The Jaggerz on Wikipedia, reading numerous online bios and an interview with a group member - nowhere was that ever mentioned.

However, Donnie Iris joining Wild Cherry of "Play That Funky Music" fame was mentioned in each of the pieces that I read.

So, who knows? By the way, is it true that you morphed into "Dr. Trance"?
 
Arrrggghhhh :mad:. I got my bands wrong. Wild Cherry it was...not Hot Chocolate. Damn escaping memory cells (*hissing noise*). Sorry about that.

And, yes, Yugo...I did morph into Dr. Trance for about 13 years. What a wild ride that was!

Well John, as Aunt Sophie is fond of blurting out when Aunt Helen tells her she's going to win some money at bingo, "I think you have ESPN. You must be telepathetic!" John C, your first name is tied into both of tonight's Stiff(s) Of The Week, Forgotten 45s or whatever this thread has morphed into, hope you'll enjoy the selections which I came upon earlier this week.

First, we're gonna drop the MicroTrak tonearm on "Boogaloo Down Broadway" by The Fantastic Johnny C.

Next up, another namesake artist. Willie The Tagger was playing this on his DeWalt boom box because he just got called back to work after a three week layoff. We suspect he was trying to send a message. Subtlety isn't his strong suit. The late-great Johnny Guitar Watson, with Ain't That A Bitch, a song that was cutting edge in it's day and still applies, especially given the state of the economy. Hope it was worth the anticipation, John C.

BTW, if Molson doesn't want to sponsor us, we may have to call Rolling Rock or Genny.

Imagine the selections that might be prompted by a 6-pack of "Green Screamers". You ABSOLUTELY don't want to share a bathroom the next morning.

"Boogaloo" reminded me of the classic ORIGINAL from Buffalo's own Dyke and the Blazers - "Funky Broadway". Even bigger was "Let A Woman Be A Woman - Let A Man Be A Man" in '69. Unfortunately, Dyke Christian was "28 with a bullet" in 1971.

How about Natural High by Bloodstone and Nathan Jones by the Supremes? Also, I don't consider Sweet Soul Music by Arthur Conley a stiff. Now Fire by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown on the other hand.
