And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

Going back 88 pages to the very first post which started it all--

"Morning Girl" by Neon Philharmonic peaked at #17 on the Hot 100, maybe not so much a stiff -- but does anyone remember "Morning Girl Parts 1 & 2" ? The "over orchestrated outro" on part 1 - the single version - after a brief interlude continued on for another 2 minutes 40 seconds. I seem to recall it getting played only on the overnight shift.

And while we're digging through the pile of 45's from 1969, how about "Paper Cup" by The 5th Dimension, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WL_8T5WHkU

And one just for the heck of it from '69, "Will You Be Staying After Sunday" by the Peppermint Rainbow.

"Morning Girl, Part 2!" Amazing. (Just as amazing as PR referencing page one of this meandering thread which began in a beer-fueled haze a while ago.) Our production guy deftly spliced together MG Part 1 and 2 and it became one of the prefered "bathroom breaks" songs of the time. You're right PR, it was "over-orchestrated," but oh, what a lifesaver when the tacos and beer from the night before gave their notice of a need for a quick trot down the hall.

We were cleaning out Aunt Gertie's basement last week and came across "I Owe You" by Jimmy Dean from the 70s. It was a sweet tribute to moms that may have been mentioned earlier, but I'll submit it for your consideration nonetheless.

Indeed, another "Stairway to the Men's Room!" Those loooong tracks were rare (and lifesavers) back then, and this could easily spin off into another thread of "Rest Room Classics" like "Beginnings" by Chicago Transit Authority and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by CSN.

Your mentioning the production guy's edit brings to mind another tune which our production guy made into a custom edit: "99 Red Balloons" by Nena, English and German versions combined.

"Rest Room Classics" LMBO! Great idea. Hell, it could even be a Rhino CD set. We'd probably have to set parameters like "minimum length of song", "#1" or "#2" and "distance to the crapper."

Okay...here goes! For you old-timers, "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. A few years later, "Like a Rolling Stone" by Dylan. And of course, The Beatles' classic -
"Hey Jude".

All well before Zep's "Stairway to Heaven".

Bathroom Classics? Well, certainly NOT a stiff, but a sure-fire #2 break - "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" by the 5th Dimension.

5D also had a few stiffs among their roster of hits. Who remembers "Carpet Man" and "California Soul"?

While we're at it, we could add a category of "Rock Musical Stiffs". For every "Hair" or "Jesus Christ, Superstar" there was a "Chess". Murray Head paradoxically had a bigger hit with "One Night in Bangkok" than he did with "Jesus Christ, Superstar".

Didn't another group cover "Turning Japanese" as well?

If you're looking for something really rare, check out the single mix of Billy Joel's "Sometimes a Fantasy." It doesn't fade out early like the version on Glass Houses. Had a conversation about that one on another message board, which resulted in him mailing me a copy of it! 8) So I now have it! "I've got blisters on my blisters!" ;D

Interesting thread, I will have to check it out entirely when I get some time!

...and what was the shortest song during which you ever saw someone take a cigarette break? 8)

Hmmm...a stiff, or just a long time since we've heard it:

Baby Sitting Boogie - Buzz Clifford

"Just A Song Before I Go" by CSN timed out at 1:50, I believe. For a while, the only time the song was played on the air of my radio station was right before the top of the hour. It was short and was great for meeting the top of the hour news. But the PD finally put a ban on using it that way. Of course, if you really want short, how about the all time shortest song I can think of, the Beatles "Her Majesty" from Abby Road.

"Her Majesty" qualifies as the shortest, but she does wear those platform shoes to fake everybody out.

It's the shortest single to top the charts, November 1960, and it still sounds great (as long as it's not played seven times a week.) I submit, for your listening and dancing plezz-yur, "Stay" by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs. If you're headed to the men's room while this song is on, zip down on the way and pray there's no line... and bring Handy Wipes cuz you ain't gonna have time to wash your hands. (A most unnnnn-savory thought!)

Also covered quite nicely by Jackson Browne as part of "Load Out / Stay."

Back to the long end of things for bathroom break or other purposes would be the live versions of "Do You Feel Like We Do", "Freebird" or if you really need a long break there's Led Zep's live version of "Dazed and Confused". None are really stiffs but we're great back in the day for breaks.

Years ago when listening to WKLX in the middle of the night "In A Gadda Da Vida" seemed to be a preferred bathroom (along with a smoke, some lunch and a quick nap) break song.
