And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

Do you realize that "God Only Knows", by The Beach Boys barely cracked the top 40? I heard on the radio today that "Apparently it is ex-Beatle Paul McCartney's favorite song". Well, "apparently" that's what he likes, but we ain't talkin' bass players here.

It's the shortest single to top the charts, November 1960, and it still sounds great (as long as it's not played seven times a week.) I submit, for your listening and dancing plezz-yur, "Stay" by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs. If you're headed to the men's room while this song is on, zip down on the way and pray there's no line... and bring Handy Wipes cuz you ain't gonna have time to wash your hands. (A most unnnnn-savory thought!)

Great when you need a short song to time into network news. Same with "Come Back When You Grow Up" by Bobby Vee. He repeats so much in it that you can do an early fade without it sounding bad.

Bathroom break songs........MacArthur Park, of course, Poinciana by Ahmad Jamal and Hill Where The Lord Hides by Chuck Mangione. No problem!
Break songs? Smitty, I recall you using my edited 4:58 version of "Beginnings" by Chicago a time or two!! Not a stiff..but the pause that refreshes!!

Time for another break down the hall: "Like a Hurricane" - Neal Young.

And don't forget the short songs "Do You Believe In Magic" and the appropriately-titled CSN&Y track, "Just a Song Before I Go"

Dunno, thinking up potty break songs is bound to bring a stiff to mind. Perhaps they come from musings while riding the porcelain pony--and they provide brief detours as we take this road trip along Stiff Highway.

"Sound Asleep" - The Turtles

Longie for pooper breaks: the full "Taxi" from Harry Chapin.

Shorties for network backtiming: "Do You Want To Know A Secret," Beats - 1:55 IIRC. And Annette Funicello's "Tall Paul," 1:34 - plus a cool cold ending which sounded, well, as cool as an Annette song CAN sound. Two ending beats, ID, Mutual tone.....then Del Sharbis. Now THAT'S radio.

Also "Hawaii Five-0" from the Ventures, another great backtimer with the big cold ending. 1:58 I believe.

Yes, 1:58 and major cold...BUT..rarely was the ending ever heard over "This is ABC NEWS"!! :D

As long as we're talking stiffs by The Turtles, how about "The Story of Rock and Roll"?

Another classic Turtles stiff: The Guide for the Married Man, from the motion picture of the same name starrring Walter Matthau and the delightful Igner Stevens.

That was what popped into my head the first time for Turtle Stiffs. And here's a soundalike tune which also places squarely in the "stiff" category peaking at #80 on the charts:
"Goodbye Columbus" - the Association

Here's a pop quiz (speaking of Association stiffs): What was the name of the single they released as the follow up to Cherish? No fair looking it up either.

Now that's funny. I would have said that, but I looked it up, and Penrod Rightout said no fair to look. Seein' as how it wasn't open book and all...well...you know....

You get the prize! We actually played that song on WDRC. The Association quickly released "No Fair At All" (which became a minor hit for them) after "Pandora's" failed to do much more than stiff out.

How or why I came to think of Bobby Bare's "All American Boy," (credited to Bill Parsons) I have no idea. And I can't explain (as the Who once sang), how it lead to this: Drop Kick Me Jesus, from Bobby Bare. I need to go back to work.
