And The Super Segues Just Keep On Comin'

I may be pushing it with this one. If so, call me out. The idea came while the crew listening to a certain radio station on the far right of the FM band that features bumpers produced with chirping birds fx and water lapping fx. There was a moment when one song ended and the customary one second dead air gap followed before the next song began. It stopped me cold because the two songs would have made an spectacular segue. It seems to be a lost art. I'm told this is because a lot of automation programs don't allow for blending songs.

So, how about a thread dedicated to the art of the sonic segue, the psychedelic segue or the spectacular segue. It doesn't have to be from the psychedelic 60s or the disco 70s... hell, it could be Joe Walsh into Depeche Mode for all we know; Dusty Springfield into Joan Armatrading; Art Of Noise into James Brown. Obviously, most of us will recognize the hit segues better than the stiff segues (uh oh... Stiff Segues. Nope, not ready for that yet.)

I'll start with something I heard back in the day on Q-107, with Canadian Content into British Invasion: April Wine "I Love to Rock" into "Satisfaction." The way I heard it, April Wine produced the fade out of this song to blend perfectly with "Satisfaction" or "Daytripper."

How about just one segue per post to give everybody a fair shake? After a while, these may not be easy to come up with. If the thread even lasts that long.

Well one of my faves has to be from 1979 on Rock 102 (back in the TM Stereo Rock days) when the currents reel had M's "Pop Muzik" back to back with Moon Martin's "Rolene" - the segue was tight and beat for beat. Very cool. I think I still have it on cassette somewhere.

That's about the only way an automation system can do cool segues - if they're recorded in advance.

into "Satisfaction."

You just wiped out half the thread out of the gate! That guitar riff works with just about everything (even after sleeping through Wind Beneath My Wings- a quicker picker-upper!). Now you have left it to creative experience to thread this needle!! Just can't get no satisfaction! LOL
Enjoy showing your combo board op stuff here...it's a lost art...keep it alive friends!!
That's all.

Just one? OK, I think this'll work fairly well:

"Foxey Lady," Jimi Hendrix Experience / "Rock and Roll Woman," Buffalo Springfield

IIRC, it sounded ultra-super in the car when tried on WBBF back in the day (wish I still could recall which jock got that inspiration)...!

I just recently attended a discusiion panel with joel delmonico v.p of clear channel syracuse and joe lee manager of waer p.r in syracuse on where is radio going and the future of radio i must say it was very interesting but it brings up some very important issues. I come from the old school of broadcasting. I have not been on the air since 1987 but now that i am retired i would like to get back in for some part-time work but corperate radio has changed everything that i found fun in broadcasting the days of slipcuing are over as well as the perfect segues, or hey i invented that seg now every one is doing it its all been repaced by the click of a mouse now its the p.d.'s job to program the computer and the perfect segs. windows media player has that option of blending on the last ten seconds of the song, their is nothing compared to slipcueing hey jude out of a hot jingle or that perfect seg that only a jock can do now im sure i can still do it the new school way im just goin to have to re-educate myself but still keep in the back of my mind that i can do that mix better than the computer did

I don't know if it will count since it is Blues but the first one that popped to mind was Bobby Bland "Goin' Down Slow" into James Peterson (who lived in Buffalo and owned a club there, father of Lucky Peterson) "Four Little Boys".

And just speaking of segues in general I had a caller one night call up saying "Hey, I was listening to one song, then it was another! How did you do that?" It made my week.

While at the Renaissance concert last night ( which I would highly recommend. Annie still has her pipes) this one came to mind:

Bloodrock D.O.A.
Renaissance Mother Russia
It's a Beautiful Day White Bird

Tried this one once and it worked well...Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane" into Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

OK, I'm old so I'll include 2 just to be a non-conformist. These may not be hip enough, but here 'tis: Saturday In The Park-Chicago into Rhinestone Cowboy-Glen Campbell. (told you I was old) and Make Me Smile-Chicago into After Midnight-Eric Clapton. Back in the day, used to throw those in on air checks when job hunting. Most PD's liked got a kick out of it......one guy in Columbus OH called and said, nice aircheck but we don't do segues at our station.........

i got that one the first time i decided to put a demo together for a job i was working overnites at cq 102 in geneva and i put a tape together for 94 rock syracuse i went to the station met with pd howie castle he threw my tape and said i want to hear you not a bunch of segs and commercials so i made a new tape went back a few weeks later and he said i'll give you this much your persistant and gave me overnites on weekends i was their till the end

How about "If you know what I mean" by Neil Diamond into "This One's For You" by Barry Manilow. Haven't heard anything more perfect than that one.

Let's re-iterate - we're talking segues here...not formatics by genre...Grin, chuckle, burp (Holy cow ! The return to MOR format)
I'll give you the segue cudos! (dang legends jocks!!-LOL)

Ahh, this takes me back to the late 70s and my days in AOR where we would always try to out-do one another with the best "Super Seg!"

This one from the late 80s allows you to show some finesse in running a tight board:

The Art of Noise with Tom Jones "Kiss" into the Information Society "What's On Your Mind"

Pastrick's Classics: Gary Wright "Dream Weaver" segued to Boston "Foreplay/Longtime"

Pastrick's Classics: Gary Wright "Dream Weaver" segued to Boston "Foreplay/Longtime"

Did you make this up? Chuckle. I can hear this one- vividly-...but where would it be heard? Strange combo as "Longtime" was rather rocking, and not a power chart topper, and Gary was rather main stream. Uniquely formatted station.

(OK, we're talking segues, but some formatic discussion should be allowed. Interesting to know where they would come from, or wish we could have done them!!)

i started at weos hobart back before college radio turned npr and they had a wild record library it was about 1979 their was no formatics it was play what you wanted so my range of music was vast so it was 3 or 4 hours of my shift to experiment from mainstream to obscure it was fun a jock by the name of todd holliday who eventually brought me to cq 102 geneva ( my first commercial job) taught me how to slipcue, backtime, and talk up intros i wish you could still do that but npr and formatics has taken over college radio as well. their is a college station here in syracuse at su that is student run very tightly formatic with a great jingle package that compete with the two big commercial chr's i know alot of people that listen to all the mainstream hits on Z89 so they dont have to listen to fuccilo commercials 100 times a day
