I'm at a loss for words on this one:

From R&R:

"WECK/Buffalo has moved to a Classic Country format from Jones' Music Of Your Life, which it had been airing 24/7. WECK has been billing $1 million a year, but all of the station's ratings have come from the upper end of the 35-64 demographic."

Jesus H. Christ! This little 1 kilowatter on 1450, obviously running completely automated, was doing a million bucks a year, and Infinity decided that it wasn't enough, and they could do better with classic country? In Buffalo?

Just a guess, but I would estimate that they were bringing over 900k to the bottom line. I think I could live nicely on that.

Maybe Howard and Mel are right, after all.<P ID="signature">______________

I love Classic Country , too. But, if I was billing a million a year with 1kw on 1450 I would leave the format alone even if it was Gospel Polka.

Agreed. It's another one of those "what were they thinking?" kind of moves.

WECK is owned by Infinity - Let the fun begin!!!!

Actually WECK is on 1230 and the stick is situated in the middle of an area where many people from their demo reside-in a suburb of Buffalo called Cheektowaga. The 1kw signal is actually pretty good and has served as a money maker with this type of format since the early '80s. This is another one of the type of moves that illustrate why terrestrial radio is going to be seriously cut in to by satellite, Ipod and plain old CD players.

They're griping because the million dollars a year they are making are coming from the upper demographics. This was the justification WRVR gave for dropping Solid Gold Sunday back when. It's not because the show didn't sell, or that it had bad ratings, but that it had such good ratings that it skewed the overall numbers "too old".

Lots of things about this don't make sense...
Another Buffalo suburb, Lancaster, has a country station WXRL/1300. This station has been owned by a former country singer since the 1970s. He's gradually moved the format to current country, but used to play classic country.

So even if the move is designed to get some country radio listeners from WXRL to tune down to WECK, those listeners in all likelihood will be 35- 64!!!!!

Could be they're protecting WYRK from another station flipping.

And classic country is going reach a younger audience? The Shania fans are surely going to tune in to hear Connie Smith and Ferlin Husky.
