and Tos's playlist drops to 300 songs

well I now think satellite might take over peoples listening habbits in ME. look at the playlist on
http://tosrocks.com/iplaylist/playlist.html
it used to be around 1000 songs now only 334 songs

... my playlist is 4,000 songs and growing with the requests I get ;D
its too bad my college days are numbered I will miss the days where everyone that loved rock said Oz your rocked my day

thoughts?

I understand that a rock station might have a bigger playlist than many other formats, but 1,000 is excessive. However, 334 seems a little small.

What listeners what and have always wanted is to sing along with their favorite songs, period.
History has proven time and time again, a receipe for ratings disaster is add more music.
They don't know it, can't sing along with it, they're gone.

Back in the good/bad ole days, a 50,000 watt blowtorch AM Top 40 station played, uh lets see, 40 songs.

Top 9-Super Heavy Rotation
Next 10-Coming up or coming down the charts
Next 10-Light
Last 11-Super Light/Daypart/Hitbound

You might have another 100 or so in blue moon and speciality weekend rotation.

IMHO, throw those top songs in do a one in three ratio. one new song (aka the top 100 songs) retro song early 00s and 90's and one rock song from the 60-80's..
if your a newer rock station do new then early 00's and 90's in the mix.

look at Lazer 99.3 and wccc 106.9 in CT especially in the evening they do ok?
and remeber its not about just the ratings but the advertisers too!
look at 101.9 WRXP in NY doesn't do well in the ratings but I think they have a great mix of music..
too bad no hard rock

300 is way too small, and keep in mind, just because a playlist is bigger (even, dare I say, MUCH bigger) it doesn't follow that all songs will be rotated equally. Sure, have your core 2 or 300, but there's nthing wrong (imo) with having a another couple hundred in slower rotation. No one, even a P1, wants to hear 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' e-v-e-r-y....s-i-n-g-l-e....d-a-y.

There is a huge difference in programming a commercial radio station and playing dj on a dinky little college station out in the middle of nowhere. You can get away with playing a lot of obscure tunes, and your half-dozen classmates/listeners will think you're the coolest dude in the world, but just try to attract a saleable audience by doing that.

I can't hear WTOS where I live, and I'm kind of out of their target demo anyway, but my guess is that the new owners are trying to focus the station toward familiar music. You generally can't go wrong by playin' the hits...it was true 40 years ago and it's true today.

i put this post on another topic, but it fits here too.

Not happy good people lost jobs at TOS. But from what I have heard the station sounds better from a music standpoint today then it did a month ago. Nice back and forth between classic and modern.

It’s funny – because through all the music research I’ve been subjected to -auditorium testing… rheostat device testing (and so on) I can tell you that I’ve seen it time and time again…there are only about 300 songs that are coalition songs – in any format.

Past that, the negatives are as strong as the positives on any one particular song.

And interesting to note that recent research showed that the average number of tunes on an I-Pod is 300.

Oddly similar in number to most radio stations playlists.

Further – when probing in music tests – I've heard participants say “I hate that song don’t play it”… while another would say “I love that song”... looking further – when we said “OK this is your favorite song – how often do you want to hear it?” – The response was generally “only once a day.”

Sorry – but I think P-1’s DO want to hear their favorite songs every stinkin’ day …

But as for "variet and depth" well, that’s what special features should be used for: In oldies – the forgotten 45, in hot AC it might be the “80’s retro moment” or what have you. “Depth” is OK if properly sandwiched and used sparingly… as feature songs or lunars.

But on the whole, I’d have to agree with Mister Microphone (and oldbones) who said– “depth kills’…

Well :) that's not what I said.

The numbers show you're not alone with that opinion. TOS is up in Augusta-Waterville, Bangor and Lewiston.

I noticed TOS is keeping up with the currents when I am around Lyndonville Tuning in. I ski up at Jay peak about every weekend... it makes me want to listen for the average of 20-30min demo. I did want to mention that 102.3 in Burlington Vt is really getting my attention getting pissed off when a song goes to mixing with kiss 102.3 from NH... (good song then static/kiss 102 when I am driving i-91 to Rt 100 etc...) However, I have transferred from Lyndon to Western Connecticut so no more college station in the woods.

I limited my choice in home buying to a place where I can hear 2 great college stations with the freedom to
serve those who need more variety than can be crammed into any ipod.

My pt 15 AM has maybe 2000 or so and I am nowhere near ready to stop adding.
