...and yet Another CHR in Spokane

KIXZ gives up on country (after 30-ish years) and is now Premium Choice CHR. After NOW 1057 announced late last week that Elvis Duran and Ryan Seacrest would be dropped in favor of local programming, suddenly HITS 96 pops on. Gee, I wonder if Elvis & Ryan will end up there?!?

I've lived in Spokane all my life. I have been in and out of radio for 15 years. I have NEVER seen this market so screwed up. I thought NOW 1057 was a great idea. I even thought HOT 969 was an OK idea if you want to use a signal to flank another station. Changing KAT to THE MOUNTAIN was a good idea. Tuning KCDA to a more 'Tripple A' approach is a good idea. But HITS 96?

There's FOUR CHR's now in Spokane. (3 if you don't count KZZU being Adult Top 40 days) I think that's a bit too much for a population of 200,000+ in Spokane itself...

Boy, I am having a hard time understanding the recent moves. Can anyone explain them? Anyone? Buller? Buller?

Somewhat interesting CHR - never heard of a CHR playing "Tonight Tonight" in 2012 or K'naan. - Same with Karmin.

Is it an emerging lean? Seems a lot of what they play is emerging artists and songs.

I don't get this either; didn't Spokane have four country stations once upon a time? Now you have a CC CHR station that's all voicetracked?

According to the ratings on this board, Spokane has two Classic Hits stations (KBBD & KEYF). How did that happen?
What a strange radio market indeed.

KBBD is "BOB-FM,"---which plays a handful of recurrent hits and 80's 90's and "whatever," and KEYF-FM bills itself at 101-point-1 FM(formerly Oldies 101.1) and plays music from the 60's 70's and 80's. The imaging voice they use is a "puker" and does NOT sound good. I'm sure they are getting what they are paying for.

BOB has no personalities--just liners and imaging and 101.1 has minimal personalities. Good music on both stations, but 101.1 is not very compelling to listen to as it should be....just my humble opinion. The announcers talk, but virtually say "nothing." And they are co-owned by Mapleton Communications.

And it will be interesting to see who bails on the CHR format first. 929/KZZU a very hot AC, 96.1/Hits 96.1, Hot 96.9(very urban), 103.1-KCDA, an alternative leaning hot A/C, 104.5 "1045 Jamz--a very urban leaning almost hip-hop CHR, and then 105.7/Now FM--straight ahead CHR with some urban leanings.

I don't believe this many CHR signals can survive in a market the size of Spokane, and now there is NO "Lite A/C" in the market...a format that would be very very successful, but no one wants to do it.

Now, I will step off my soapbox....

What about KAZZ 107.1? They are classic hits aren't they?

KAZZ WAS a classic hits station, but they've been off the air for almost a month. Wonder if they will even be returning to the air. Plus their signal is horrible....their tower in located in Loon Lake...and the 25,000 watts shoots right over Spokane. You can pick it up on the Northside OK, and on the South Hill ok, but downtown and in the majority of Spokane...NO SUCH LUCK. They had their stereo generator on but music was in MONO. I know someone was going to do an LMA with them, not sure how that wound up. My suggestion would be for them to get a city of license change to let's say "Mead." That way they could move the tower and thus cover the market. THEN, that station would have a chance to do something, but again I wonder IF they will even be returning to the airwaves!

LOL The joke is really on Mapleton.... Dropping Premiere products that are working... The research is already out there! Did you think for a second Clear Channel would not pick up there own products after you've spent all your money marketing them in the market! DOH!

Watch Now 105.7 become Later 105.7! B Mega Morning Show! Are you kidding me.

Also... watch Hot 96.9 die in the crossfire.... I bet there will be no billboard campaigns this spring book... the scan will stop on 96.1 before 96.9....

The sleeping Giant Clear Channel has awaken in Spokane.

Start selling and breaking up those clusters now... if this works it will not be pretty by this Fall!

Hey "SpokaneRadioDJ" - do your homework and read up on what happened with the Premiere shows that NOW 105.7 had. Clearchannel stole them back. They took them away from NOW FM and placed them on their own station after changing formats from kicks-96.

This. With CC entering the fray and having some top-notch syndicated programming, their CHR will stand a good chance to generate some numbers out of the gate.

Last book I saw out of Spokane KEZE was at best moderately successful. This latest move will turn the CHR war into a Mapleton/Clear Channel battle. Morgan Murphy/Queen B just got pushed out of the main ring. I'm sure the gang on Boone are huddling going over what to do next.

My suggestion would be for them to get a city of license change to let's say "Mead." That way they could move the tower and thus cover the market.

This may not be accurate, but I've always heard that due to signal contours and protections KAZZ is locked where they are. There are literally no relocation options for them. None of the players in Spokane (or anyone else) has made a grab for KAZZ to my knowledge in the how many years it's been on the market? If there was a way to improve it's market coverage, short of the already tried northside booster, it would have been done already.

Speaking of KAZZ, looks like the ownership has changed again. According to the FCC, this is who owns it now: JOSEPH NAPPI, JR., PERSONAL REP. OF EARLE T. KAZMARK ESTATE. Wasn't Kazmark the original owner of the license? Fascinating it's returned back to his estate now.

Anyone want to guess when KAZZ's license is returned to the FCC?

I stand corrected.... that's even more funny, "Stolen" lol... it doesn't surprise me... just like non clear channel stations joining the Iheartradio platform... when you use their products you are simply feeding the machine.... either way.. Now 105.7 has just been shown the door! Happy early 2nd Birthday! Clear channel is planning to blow the candles out before they are lit!

Well, you haven't been right about anything yet. Also, you sound like a Clearchannel employee. Do you really think a bunch of sindicated shows and premium choice will beat local?

In Spokane Yes! Lookingforajob... Look at Now 105.7 ratings.. yes syndication kicked the shit out of ZZU, Why would you think it would do any different on 96.1.

Pendleton's KGZG is top 10 in demos with no syndication or jocks on air.

So far all is possible in Spokane.

Even you finding a job is !

...me finding a job??? Ha!

I don't think I'm interested in it. As I look at the Spokane landscape, there's not only no place for someone like me, but no room for anyone anymore! With Clearchannel automating everything, they have become the joke of the market. Hits-96? Come on. It was'nt too long ago there wasn't ANY CHR's in town, now there's 4 (if you count KGZG). And KXLY - they can't think for themselves at all! 3 years ago, the country battle between KIX and KAT is getting heated, so they have to get into it with Coyote. NOW 105.7 comes on successfully, then they have to get in it with hot 96.9. Wasn't too long ago when wild 103.9 came on then a minute later KXLY puts on Wired 96.9? All they do is follow everyone elses lead. And Mapleton - all they do is fire people. But I always find myself listening to one of their stations.

Seems Mapleton is spending money on billboards. When I was out and about today I saw at least 3 of them....not particularly impressive, but interesting to see they are interested in promoting their station. That IS a good thing IMHO. Haven't seen anything as far as billboards or any advertising of any kind for 92.9, 96.1, 96.9, 103.1 or 104.5. Good to see somebody doing something other than just free Facebook.

Billboards?!?! Ha! I wonder how many people they had to fire to pay for that!!!

Well, IMHO NOW 105.7 is the only real player in Spokane. The others are on the air just to flake it.

Its The Spring Book. Its completely normal to run billboards at this time especially if there is a new competitor in the market. Now 105.7's back is against the wall... they should have been branding there station the minute it went number one a few ratings periods back. Too late now!

ZZU has a ton of billboards up also for their morning show, this also happens every Spring Book.

Just because its normal in bigger markets doesn't mean it makes sense in Spokane. Then again you have to advertise your station and give the perception of being great to the market of advertisers in which they have to sell to and over charge.

Considering billboards cost around 5 grand a period per board at Lamar, I would simply rather put my station vans on the street and continue to use Facebook and other cheaper ways to advertise. Its just smarter.

Only 208,000 people stay in the city of Spokane. Ratings are based on only about 1500 diarys sent out. Only about 800-900 will even fall in the city itself. The others are spread out between areas outside Spokane county.

Spring ratings period is TSA, add up the cost of boards and the ROI is not even worth it. If your going to waste that kind of money, by numbers you would only do so when it can be the most effective. Like the summer and winter boots when the diary fall in the metro a much more concentrated area n my opinion.
