I am not one for sticking up for my former employer, but some of the shows I worked on were
done by people who were "passing the hat" among themselves to pay for the air time, others had sponsorship
One group I worked with for years did religious programming on Saturday mornings, they were
passionate about what they did and their listeners. No commercial station was going to give them "public affairs time"
so leased time worked for them. Truthfully those are the people I miss the most, really nice people.
Another group I worked with, that required getting up early on Saturday to go to the studios, after working my day gig all week
was Brazilian, One day I asked them why they did their show so early, because we had an available hour from 9 to 10 AM so they could go 8 to 10
instead of 7 to 9, and I could stay in bed an hour later, and they said that many of their listeners were delivery people (newspapers)
and that is when they were in vehicles and listening.
And then there was Oscar, he did Sunday mornings, doing a show targeted at Greeks, where else was he going to go?
Now I am no fan of Infomercials, I hate what WRKO and WBZ have done with their weekends, but there are times where
leased time works and I agree with it.
