Andi Barness Weather at 3TV

Andi Barness was in for Kim Quintero tonight at 5 on 3TV. She did a fine job -- perhaps she can be a "permanent" substitute person on 3TV. They do need someone to fill in during vacations and pregnancies.

Meanwhile, ABC15 have been advertising for a weekend met for 9 months! :D

Andi is not trained to be a weather person but is competent enough to stand in front of the Chroma and point to temperatures and radar graphics. I only caught part of her Saturday night reports but on Sunday her full report at 5pm was nothing to write home about. She reported about someplace reaching 125° and called it Furnace Creek (which is located in Death Valley, CA). Another of her graphics was showing expected temps at 7am tomorrow and most of the cities were listed at 100° or more....really at 7am?

Andi is a familiar face to Phoenix television having worked at Fox-10 and ABC15. I think she is a good addition to the 3TV family but needs some help if she will continue to do weather.

Randy Kollins over on ABC15 also reported the 125 degrees at Furnace Creek in Death Valley. Yes, I agree that Andi went overboard with termperatures -- no need to zoom forward in time with temps -- just show static temp. Despite this, she did a whole lot better than Kristen on Satureday mornings over on Fox 10.

I saw that as well. My hunch is that she meant the 7am to be 7pm and goofed....

What looked good on her desktop didn't translate well to the "big screen". Andi just needed to show maps with static temperatures (at 11pm, 8am, etc.). Otherwise, she was poised while doing the weather.

According to Tess on GMAZ this morning, Andi will be filling in all summer long as the 3TV forecasters take vacation. They just need to have her stop zooming the temperatures so much -- just show static high and low temperatures.

Note to local weather people: if you need to show additional information, just show a national map and gesture at whatever storm system happens to be in the Midwest, East, or Southeast. Stop reading every d**n temperature in the Valley. The three degree difference between Goodyear, Chandler, Deer Valley, and Downtown Phoenix is not that interesting. :D

No different from when Dave Munsey would report seemingly every location around the United States that received and inch of rain or more on that day.

At least, Dave puts SOME effort into it (or his producer does). As I've said before, I would love to get paid to do the weather in Phoenix. I used to say the same thing about Seattle, but their weather is infinitely more interesting than Phoenix (low/high tides, marine forecasts, mountain forecasts, etc.).

Agree, and furthermore I wouldn't even bother with a weather segment at all. Weather is available on the Internet (down to your specific ZIP code) and on at least three TV subs 24X7. There is no need, particularly on the morning shows, to give the same wx info every 15-20 minutes.

That said, this was the first morning I had seen Andi Barness and she didn't look very comfortable when the camera was on. She bobbled a few attempts at ad hoc conversation and was stiff in her vocal delivery. For the life of me I can't understand why stations spend the money for a dedicated weather person. Better to let the anchor(s) cover it just like any other segment.

You obviously have not seen the YouTube video posted by Yetta Gibson showing what happens behind the scene at 3TV. Those anchors are so busy between reading the headlines, they wouldn't have time to also do the weather.

I think the weekend crew is a bit more relaxed. ;D

Really?!? The anchors are too busy to do the weather??? Pray tell how Kaley has managed on many occasions to anchor and do the weather on weekday GMAZ for 5.5 hours! ;)

Did you look at the video? He was being very sarcastic as the "busy" anchors were playing a game of catch while the weather segment was shooting.

Nope, I didn't. As a rule, I don't click on links provided in public forums. If he's being sarcastic, IHT needs to learn how to use smiley faces or other common techniques to note sarcasm in written language.

Back to the original subject...

I watched all Saturday and some of Sunday GMAZ. I'm a huge Andi Barness fan. I switched away from ABC15 Mornings when Andi stopped doing traffic.

Overall, I thought a lot of the conversations between Barness, Tess Rafols and Ryan McDonnell seemed forced. I'm sure it'll get easier in the coming weeks. There was a segment where it was an uncomfortable few seconds where Barness was waiting for the screen graphics to change. Barness has a clear strong voice and will soon get the hang of weather.

Andi needs to learn how to giggle and laugh...that's how the weekday GMAZ team gets through everything. Weekend GMAZ is often a bit clumsier because Tess is often more like Tara used to be.

Hmmm...

Can't say that I've noticed that. I will respectively disagree but will look into this.
