Andrea Tantaros Show...anybody with an opinion?

The farm system has withered because big market radio doesn't give two craps about quality anymore. A market #300 guy can get a job in New York if he's willing to work cheap enough and knows the right people. Talent and experience mean nothing anymore.

As I said before, quality isn't a issue for the audience. They aren't motivated by quality. So why should anyone else?

Quality wasn't the motivation of the farm system either. The farm system was the radio equivalent of the snipe hunt.

The difference between getting a host from the radio farm system or national TV is that the listeners actually know the TV person. So that host is starting out with fans. The guy slogging it out in the farm system is a local hero known only in his little home town. That's the problem with radio...too small time. That was fine 50 years ago. It doesn't work today. That fact that some blogger can build a national fan base while local radio hosts can't get beyond their square foot of a hometown is the reason why the radio farm team is obsolete.

Yeah... sorta like giving a slot on ESPN to a well-known ex-jock. Sometimes it works. A lot of times it doesn't.

On the other hand, the guy coming up from say, Paducah to Indy to Chicago to the network, may have had time to learn... make mistakes... learn... achieve some success... learn--and may have developed the skill-sets required of major league stardom.

It could happen. Even in 2013.

Then, again, she's real good-looking, huh? That always plays well on the radio...

So you're saying that after they've gone through the farm system, they won't make mistakes? Like bad mouth a girls basketball team?

The reality is that people make mistakes regardless of their training and experience. The idea that you get a polished professional after years in minor markets ignores a lot of facts, such as they pick up bad small market habits, they get married and have children in those markets, making them less willing to leave, and if they really were good in the small market, why not simply VT for the large market and stay home? Lots of people are doing that. I know a morning duo who were making enough money in their small market that they never had a reason to leave. It's really hard to leave success, no matter how small the market is. I've known a duo who had a great thing going in a Top 50 market, left their success for syndication, and had it bomb in a few months. They never worked again.

Good point. Radio sure is a sad sight these days.

Our job is to give the people what they want. If they prefer beer to champagne, who are we to judge?

Eh, I do what interests me. If the listeners like it, great! If not, they'll get over it.

I have a different view. I see radio as offering an amazing array of content right now. Multiple places to get SportsTalk, Business/Investment Talk, How To Tips, etc. All for free. There is quality content available, and because of the Internet, it's easy to find where on the dial it's located.

Re the "farm system"...Don't forget Rush started on local radio in Cape Girardeau, MO. (Also don't forget his daddums owned the radio station...)
