Andy Furman to start on 1160 WQRT in February

One problem was that WYLL (Chicagoland) was operating on an "STA" as the 355 expressway work was messing with their pattern.
Once totally complete, their nighttime emissions toward WQRT should be significantly less. The NIF contour for WQRT increases in comparison to what it was.
The rumor mill also has it that WYLL would be locating the day operation from the new site. The pattern would throw most of the energy, north, to Chicago. This would take care of the "critical hours" situation at WQRT.
There is also some work scheduled for the spring that will help the situation a bit.

jry...My understanding is that the construction work near WYLL has no effect on their night pattern at all. In fact, the construction work is being done near their daytime facility and the nighttime facility south of town is not affected. Here is a quote from the Engineering Attachment in the STA Application:

"Recently, construction and repair commenced on a bridge located in the near vicinity
to the WYLL day antenna site. A crane (or cranes) is being used in the construction
process. Due to the effect of RFI on the electronic control equipment of the crane(s), it has
been determined that in the interest of safety, WYLL should operate from their night site
during daytime hours when crane operation is necessary."

This plainly shows that their nighttime signal has not been affected at all and it is what it is right now. Maybe the return to the daytime facility will alter the negative effects during critical hours, but the nighttime will not change.

Yes, we saw all of that but drove out to their night site, near Joliet, to take readings and you wouldn't believe all of the cranes and work being done. I 355 goes right up tight to the side of their night array. Maybe by now the work is done at Joliet. We'll be heading out there again, soon.
However, if they were operating from the night sight at reduced power, WQRT should not be seeing any interference during critical hours.
The day site is in Des Plaines and i thought it was pretty congested up there.
I wonder if they made a mistake on that filing.

It doesn't look like they made a mistake. The attachment shows a contour map with this label:

"DAYTIME ALLOCATION STUDY
FOR AN STA OPERATION
WYLL(AM) - 1160 KHZ - CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
LIC: 50 KW DAY/50 KW NIGHT - DA-2
PROPOSED: 15 KW DAY/50 KW NIGHT - DA-2
JANUARY, 2008"

You can see it's 15kw Day and 50kw Night. It would make sense with that site that they would get 50kw toward the city using 15kw. I wonder why the proposed is listed as "DA-2" when they're using the same site and pattern.

"The WYLL night site is located 53.1 kilometers distant from the day site; therefore,
operation from the night site should have no impact on the bridge construction.
It is proposed to operate from the nighttime site during daytime with an operating
power of 15.0 kW. While employing the nighttime directional antenna system during
daytime hours, it is necessary to reduce power to 15 kW to protect two adjacent channel
stations. Operation of the night pattern at 15.0 kW will protect stations WHBY,1150 kHz,
Kimberly, Wisconsin and WFDL, 1170 kHz, Waupun, Illinois; see Figure 1."

Mr. JRY, I think your only kidding yourself if you think that Chicago 50K Flame thrower is going to change it's night pattern, it is not going to happen, they were the ones who owned 1160 here and took advantage of the 1160 Floence signal and then abandon this market, that is the shame of it. Unfortunitly you have a limited night time signal on 1160 that covers a limited area in the Florence Ky area and that is not going to change, so don't kid the bloggers. I am an engineer and I have studied their pattern, they lay a signal over Cincinnati and that was part of their intent when they did their upgrade to 50 K at night. Your daytime signal is kick ass , but night time ?, try for a LPFM translator it will go farther than your 990 watts nights. Good Luck.

Luv..The 1160 night signal is better than you say. It covers a heck of a lot more than just Florence. The station did fairly well as BOB in the 90s, so I'm sure Furman will be OK. 1360 was BOB's main competitor in those days, and BOB consistently out-cumed them. That's not the point of my posts. This station will always have a night problem, unless they do what Chicago does: 2 sites. There are several AM sites that could be possibilities, including jry's friends at the new WDJO. WCVG and WNOP have closer night sites than 1160. Who knows what could be done?

El , on the Cincinnati side of the river the WQRT 1160 night signal may be there in spots but WYLL 1160 Chicago is

chattering over it, their 50K skywave signal drowns out QRT's night time tea pot signal, get real, moving WQRT

1160 night signal to the Ohio side, they still have to have a city grade signal back in Florence, that's going to take

a costly engineering study, and then trying to get that by the commission, will take some deep pockets $, I do

not see that happening any time soon, it is what it is, an AM Daytimer, just the way Salem left it.

Sorry Luv...the study's been done and there's one tower site that would accommodate a nighttime signal from the Ohio side for 1160. You might be surprised to know which site and who did the study. There's no requirement at night to cover all of Florence.

1160 puts a consistent strong nighttime signal into the west side of town. That covers a lot of ground. It's good for most of the evening as far out at I-74 and Rybolt Road. It has its moments on the east side, but that's weather related to a large degree. I don't think it even matters, considering how low nighttime cumes are anyway. Radio is a 6am-7pm money maker. Anything after that is gravy on a station liek this. Why do you think even the big stations voicetrack or synidcate evening shows?

Oh yes , I 'm not surprised, that was the WSAI tower site, But that was sometime ago.

Thanks for all of the good data, guys.

It seems like when i looked at their old Nighttime facility and the new one, the radial that points towards Cincy was either cut by 25 or 50%.
The NIF contour was lowered a bit. The construction that i personally saw, next to their night site, was throwing the pattern off a bit.
Put a bunch of steel and tall cranes within 100 yards of a 50KW DA and let the fun begin.
Hard to imagine that 355 construction would be happening next to both sites some 50 miles apart.
I'll keep digging.

Luv..not RM (or BH) sorry. But if you knew about the study why would you say it couldn't be done? Interesting.

jry...Good luck with anything there. Who are you protecting at night anyway? There's got to be a way to improve that night signal from some corner of the market.

OK uh.. El !
JRY I do wish you the best with that signal, but you know the real world these days with the FCC, try for a pre sunrise and post sunset and see what they tell you , it's not happening.

There is quite a bit of protecting going on here. 1160 south of us, the famous WYLL in Chitown, then some first and second adjacents.

The pre-post thing won't help us. We are already at 990 watts at night. Last i checked, the most you can get with pre-post is 500.

Besides, our situation is pronounced during critical hours.

Once spring breaks, we will be working on what may help. I do not believe that there is any more power increases in our future and we have already studied a dial change.
We'll see.....

How about an FM translator? I'm from Sharonville and the 1160 night signal is usually unlistenable. There are several good translators in the area, but they've all been gobbled up by the scourge of the airwaves that is K-LOVE/Air1. Maybe they would be willing to part with one?

I have sold them stuff. They are good buyers and don't like to part with too much.
I tried to buy their translator in Lexington and they won't budge. They don't need the signal as it just repeats
what one of their full power stations airs.
Bummer.

any thoughts on how the first show is going so far? I was unable to hear the first 45 minutes because the listen live link at the bottom of the home page wouldnt load. clicked in through a link at the top of page---but was instructed to load something called "JetStream"...why? So far Furball sounds ok...but the phones sound muddled...and why is Eric Turner doing UC basketball analysis? Also sounds like Furball has bartered lots of ads...he has been in quite a few so far...

They did detect a stream problem.
My Mac Book has problems sometimes. Ticks me off.
Nope, no barter. No trades.
Muddy phones...... they did mention a slight problem with something. I am sure that they'll have it fixed for Tues.

Update/impression from a fan, not a radio pro....

I left work at five and was able to pick up his show in my car. I was very glad to hear him. That was in Evendale and reception was decent on the way home to Anderson.

I then used my home radio to listen to the rest of the show. Reception was ok until about 6:15 or so and it continued to deteriorate until 7.

I think it took awhile for Andy to warm up and be himself but I am sure he will continue to shake off the rust. I do not know what role JC McCoy will play as a sidekick or if he will just be a fairly silent producer. I was surprised Mr. McCoy was not more involved on air.

I don't know much about the way commercials work but I was surprised and I guess happy about how many the show had. In fact, it was interesting to me to hear some of the small businesses that I know nothing about, especially in Northern KY. I sort of get tired of the WLW commericial fare, including the Blue Ash/Montgomery orientation.

As I said, I am no pro but it seemed that the new team needs to smooth out the production of the show, if that is the right term. I am sure that comes with time as these guys are seasoned pros.

I hope I can improve the reception from home. I have a better radio in the garage that I will use in good weather when I am puttering around after work.

Wow, Great assessment, Uncas.
The reason why it dropped out on you at 6:15 PM was due to power change, 6:15 being local sunset.
That changes in a couple of weeks. If you can pick it up at home, until 6:15 PM, the whole program should not be a problem in March.

Thanks for the thoughts and impressions.
