Andy Griffin Show on UNC-DT

I notice that episodes of the Andy Griffin Show are shown on UNC-DT, one of the digital subchannels of the University of North Carolina statewide public (PBS) TV network. Andy is seen on UNC-NC, a channel dedicated to all things North Carolina. How is this possible? The program is shown on commercial stations in just about every TV market in the state, including WAXN/64 in Charlotte. Usually the program is aired late at night. BTW, I have to say UNC-TV is one of the best PBS affilates anywhere...

Maybe UNC-TV shows public domain episodes, while the commercial stations show the episodes still in copyright. Anyone know?

No, Andy Griffin was a sketch on SCTV. Or was that Merv Griffth?

Not exactly -- just an excerpt or two

UNC-TV is currently running a series on the "Pioneers of Television". You most likely saw a chapter that had excerpts from "The Andy Griffith Show".

The Andy Griffith Show is NOT in public domain. CBS owns the copyright to all the episodes, B&W and color.

If UNC-TV wanted to air Andy Griffith they would have to obtain the telecast rights in 9 different DMAs. That's not gonna happen any time soon -- WFMY-2 in Greensboro airs Andy Griffith at 5:30 PM Monday through Friday.

Some episodes are in fact public domain -- if you went to a discounter like Wal Mart or Dollar Tree, you'll find some el-cheapo DVDs of The Andy Griffith Show from labels other than CBS or Paramount. These DVDs are sourced from old 16mm network or syndication prints, and often had their theme music changed (THAT is still under copyright).

Many other old series, like The Dick Van dyke Show, Bonanza, Beverly Hillbillies, etc. also have some episodes that are PD, but others that are still under copyright.

That reminds me, "Family Guy" is not public domain either - you know that show, with the Griffith family?

WRAL/5 in Raleigh has just starting airing Andy at 10 AM weekdays,
and has been running him on Saturday nights at 7:30 for some time.
WDBJ/7 Roanoke, VA also runs Andy at 5:30.

But to call him "Andy Griffin" is an honest mistake; he's gotten a
lot of mail over the years that was intended for either Merv Griffin
or Andy Williams; even his own manager, Dick Linke, was prone
to call him "Andy Griffin."

So what show did WRAL cancel/relegate to overnights?

My 3 year old likes Andy Griffith.
And she says his name right.
Makes me proud, and proves it can be done. ;)

WRAL kicked "The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet" I think it is called to late late nights. I guess now, it is just an earlyearly "Morning Show." ;D
They had Keith Ablow on at 10 am for a few months before that, and he seems to show up on "Mike and Juliet" from time to time...

Apparently WRAL isn't having much luck
against Rachael Ray on WTVD. But the
rest of the day, from 11 AM on, is a
different story, since WRAL has the CBS
daytime lineup. AFAIK, "The Young And
The Restless," which airs on WRAL at 4,
is still beating Oprah,

Andy also airs on Saturday nights at 7:30,
against the Saturday edition of "Wheel Of
Fortune" on WTVD, and against what may
be UNC-TV's most popular program (or
very close to it): "The Lawrence Welk Show."

One show that I think is in public domain is the short-lived 1992 teen soap "Swan's Crossing", starring Sarah Michelle Gellar before Buffy. Almost the entire 65-episode run is on YouTube because the other half of Episode 34 is missing.

The show was syndicated by Sachs Film Distribution, who I believe are long out of business though reruns would later air on the USA Network and the Trouble channel in Britain. Whoever has the rights now, we don't know.

Another show also on public domain is the 1980-81 version of "Let's Make A Deal" with Monty Hall, which was taped in Vancouver but got little or no clearance in the U.S. And unlike the '70s and 1984-86 LMADs, it will never see the light of day on GSN or its Canadian counterpart GameTV anytime soon because Catalena Productions (who co-produced the show along with Hatos-Hall Productions) went bankrupt a long time ago.

Catalena also produced "Pitfall", but here's an interesting story about it: Alex Trebek's paycheck from hosting the show got bounced; he tried to get it cleared a couple times but to no avail, and he decided to frame that check in his wall.

Trebek said he was screwed by this ("stiffed" in his words), though he would literally screw them back in 1984 when the late Merv Griffin asked him if he would do a new version of "Jeopardy!" for syndication. The rest as they say was history.
