Andy Griffith- Nice Guy or Not ?

Andy also did not come to Frances Bavier's funeral, even though
he was filming "Matlock" only about 150 miles away. But then again,
Ms. Bavier was no Aunt Bee in real life.
From what I've heard from several sources, the reason Andy Griffith did not attend Frances Bavier's funeral was due to the fact that he tried on several occasions to see her when he was in the area but SHE REFUSED to see him and wouldn't even answer the door when ever he attempted to see her.

Having the "advantage" ::) of living in Siler City, I hear those same stories. In fact, she didn't even like the neighborhood kids
coming to her house to play trick or treat on Halloween.

So what was her problem anyways? Did she just not like people or went crazy and lived the life of a hermit?

It certainly speaks to Limbaugh's impact and influence that a few minutes on his show can so quickly start to unravel a public
persona that Griffith had spent a lifetime to construct.

Griffith had done such a good job of this that he was actually cast against type as a super villain in the spoof film
Spy Hard for the sheer comic effect.

Actually, Andy Griffith did a lot of made-for-TV-Movies from the early '70's to the mid '80's or so in which he was always the villian in the movie, trying to break his nice guy image, everything from corupt judges and crooked small-town sheriffs to a guy in one movie that beat up and ran over bikers and others different from him just for the hell of it. So the Super Villain role in "Spy Hard" was not the FIRST VILLIAN ROLE OF HIS CAREER!!!

I remeber as a youngster, Ralph Edwards featured Andy on "This is your life"..Andy seemed kida annoyed by the whole thing..that was my first inkling that he wasn't exactly Mr Nice guy..

I've heard similar stories about Skelton, but I've also heard he was nice to fans,: he would launch into his schtick at the drop of a hat when hed meet fans..

Another reputed "Monster" that no one has mentioned is dear sweet "Uncle Miltie"..I've read the week he hosted "SNL" in the 70's was a nightmare for the staff & writers...by most accounts, a very un-pleasant man..

Nope, he was a villain in one of my very favorite Hawaii Five-O episodes, although he was sort of a good natured slapstick crook.

I work (ed) with a guy that has dealt with celebrities thru radio, TV and dinner theatre.. One day we were sitting around the studio talking about famous people we have worked with. I was surprised he said the biggest a**hole he ever met was Red Skelton. He said he was rude and just full of himself. I was somewhat surprised by the way he described him but believed him. I never particularly liked Skelton or thought he was that funny.
BTW, the celebrity he was the most pleasantly surprised by....
Tom Jones. He said he was very friendly and professional. Just a nice guy.

Andy also was the villan in "Murder in Coweta County" who thought he was above the law, but ended up being convicted & executed for murdering someone in a neighboring county..

The general public would be surprised at the number of actors and entertainers whose public persona is a complete opposite to their real personality.

Again I mention my co-worker who once was employed at CBS in Hollywood. He just loved Carol Burnett, saying she was one of the most kindest person he ever met.

Someone mentioned Danny Kaye. My friend said Kaye was indeed a profane monster.

He also told me of a story where the former writers of the Milton Berle Show would call up his widow on a daily basis shortly after Berle died asking if he was truly dead. They did that cause they hated the guy for the way he treated his staff.

I personally had the mis-fortune of running into Alex Baldwin once at a function. He's a true piece of work. Egotist to the hilt.

Whether Berle was a Grade A jerk or not, that is a very cruel thing to do to his widow.

I had an uncle who was head of maintenance for a large hotel that celebrities liked to frequent.
In particular he seemed to have a big problem with Andy Williams for being a rude egomaniac.
And he once got in trouble when Yul Brenner treated him in a rude and condescending manner
on an elevator. (he stopped it at the next floor and threw Brenner out of the car!) Just a
reprimand though.....union gig, you know! ;)
