Andy Griffith Show

Watching this past weekend's marathon on TV Land got me to thinking about all the great episodes of Andy and trying to make a list of my favorites. I'll start out with my top 3. What's yours?

1. "Citizen's Arrest"---the greatest episode Bar None
2. Barney & Floyd get held hostage by the escaped women convicts.
3. The one where Ernest T. Bass is trying to court the Darling girl and makes up that stupid song ("Fire too hot, jump in the pot.......")

Citizens Arrest is legendary. Say the words to many people who weren't even alive when the original episode aired and they know where it all came from. They may have seen reruns on TV Land et al, but the words still are familiar to one and all.

You are correct, an example of Mayberry, Barney, and Andy at their very best.

Citizen's Arrest is also my favorite', followed by Barney and the Choir.

I attempted to watch the program several times, but I found it not funny and not entertaining. Then again, I don't like "I Love Lucy" or "The Honeymooners". would definitely prefer "Car 54 Where Are You" re-runs to any of the above.<P ID="signature">______________

Another one, "Opie and the Birds." Probably a close to a tear jerker as TAGS ever got.

There was the episode where Barney gave the govanor a ticket.

I liked the ones where the sisters made moonshine in a still in their greenhouse, and where the burglar hid in the trunk of a car in Wally's Garage and stole stuff overnight. Barney hooked up a hidden camera and took a picture of himself when he put the camera into position.

What really impressed me about the show was how it could show a very serious side as well as a comedic side. For example: the episode where Barney tells a college student doing a class project about all the faults with the sheriff's department. The student is actually a newspaper reporter who uses Barney's comments in a story, and gets Andy into trouble with the state attorney general. During a hearing, Barney admits he went too far with his remarks, but also expresses his admiration for Andy and the work he does for the community. I thought that scene showed some great acting by Don Knotts and proved that his character was more than just a bumbling fool.

I also remember another episode where Andy and his girlfriend, who served as the town nurse, were unable to hook up on several dates because Opie did not tell his father where he was supposed to meet her for their get-togethers. When Opie admits this to Andy, he said he was afraid his father wouldn't want him anymore if his relationship to the nurse became serious. Andy explains that nothing will ever come between them because they are father and son, even when he is courting a lady friend. That was a scene filled with warmth and love, something you don't find in 21st century sitcoms where every kid is a brat and the parents are spineless dopes.

Humor is a quirky thing and it manifesrs itself in different ways to different people. Some individuals just don't think shows a la Lucy, Andy, et al are funny or entertaining, and there are many who will whole heartedly agree.

Once had a biology professor my college freshman year who laughed only once in the entire semester--when she related how a student of hers once fell on the ice and broke his leg. Now THAT's hilariously funny, at least in the
prof's estimation.

Some of my favorite episodes include:

Barney trying to convince Andy that the local bank needs improved security, so he dresses up as the cleaning lady and ends up locked in the bank’s safe. He ends up crashing through the wall next door into a beauty shop. The bank guard was some old geezer armed with a civil war pistol that didn’t work.

Thinking that Andy’s life is being threatened by a just released prison inmate, Barney recruits Otis, Gomer and a few of the other town idiots as deputies in order to protect Andy.

Barney and the World War One motorcycle he bought to patrol Mayberry.

Barney coming back to Mayberry for his high school reunion, only to find out that his long-time love Thelma Lou got married.

Even Andy Griffith said it on the Larry King Show that Don Knotts was the “heart and soul” of that show, and that it was impossible to replace Knotts once he left. I believe they did have another actor play Andy’s deputy, but that guy (Warren?) just wasn’t funny at all.

"Warren" was played by Jack Burns. No, he didn't fare well in Mayberry...Too bad, because the guy has an A+ comedy resume otherwise (Onetime comic partner with George Carlin, Second City, where he hooked up with Avery Schreiber, and head writer (I think) for both "The Muppet Show" and "Fridays".)
IIRC, they made the mistake of having him slip into the patter he used with Schreiber in the cabdriver skits ("Y'know what I mean?" "Yeah." "Huh?" "Yeah." "Huh?" "Yeah.")

Maybe somebody knows this...Was the classic "Barney Robs The Bank" ep based in any way on the real life incident where Paul Harvey tried to break into an Air Force missile installation to prove how lax the security was? (Boy, does that sound like it was ripped from today's headlines!)
