Andy Roth: Place Your Bets

Entercom's Philly cluster to bolster the company's ESPN affiliate stations?

Greater Media owns Philly's ESPN affiliates WPEN AM and FM, along with adult hits WBEN-FM.

Entercom has no presence in their corporate home base.

About 195 miles southwest on I-90 according to speculation on the Cleveland board.

'Twas clearly identified as speculation, Nathan... like OMW, I try to be very clear about what's confirmed information, what's educated speculation, and what's simply making its way around the rumor mills, and Andy's next move falls into that third category, at least for now.

(And what the heck is "Normal Stereo"? ??? )

Ah, I just realized that signature has a typo - it should be "Ultra stereo... superior to Normal Stereo" - that was from some comment on a MST3K-"Space Mutiny" video on YouTube long ago (the film was done in "Ultra Stereo").

Sorry but I was majorly confused by the thread. Unless shown otherwise, I had a really hard time thinking that he would head west of I-90. It is easy to see why Entercom retained him, not even thinking about the Cleveland situation. Kinda why on said Cleveland thread, I immediately downplayed it.

Multiple mixed signals at the same time don't help one bit lol.

Thanks for the clarification. :)

Was out of town and on vacation but got home yesterday in time to hear some of S&B and was surprised to hear Schopp say "Well, not that we have a boss right now" and then they played some comical "NO BOSS ANYMORE" sounder and Mike and Chris and Greg and I believe Paul Hamilton all giggled about it.

If Roth is gone, who is temporarily in charge? Is it Wenger or someone else?

Andy is indeed the new program director of CBS Radio's upcoming sports talker "92.3 The Fan" in Cleveland, or whatever it will be called or what frequency it'll land on.

(There are some who think it'll launch on the more powerful 98.5, and that classic rock WNCX will move to 92.3, but that's just educated speculation at this point.)

How much do I win? Heh. (Re: "Place Your Bets")

When the local rumblings there about him being promoted within Entercom showed up on this board, it was all I could do not to respond. I've known Andy's new gig for nearly two weeks now...but was asked to not give out his name. Everyone following this Cleveland format flip knows it now.

The boys and girls of Entercom Buffalo had a farewell party for Andy last night at a local establishment located not too far from 500 Corporate Parkway.

Lotta 'GR staffers are sad to see Andy go for personal reasons, but they are happy he's moving up in the industry.

Sounds like Wenger is in charge of 'GR programming... for now. The talk at the bar last night is that Schopp and Bulldog and Greg Bauch and Paul Hamilton are among those not thrilled with the current setup but remain hopeful a "cool guy" takes over for Andy.

Schopp and Hamilton in particular are really pushing the bar with the quick little comments about not having a boss, especially during the last hour of their show. Not sure what they are thinking since Wenger is well known for being a constant monitor of all the local programming he's in charge of. Bulldog seems to know better and is wise to not snicker at Bauch's "NO BOSS ERA" sounders, although Mike and Paul don't seem to care. I caution them to watch what they say on the air... and at the bar.

Good luck Andy!

How long was Andy PD of WGR, and what's his resume before that?
Roth took orders and executed them well. But he'll have a far different situation in Cleveland than he had in Buffalo, where the Buffalo Sabres helped power WGR to top three ranking, often number one in certain dayparts, Men 25-54 and WGR was part of the Entercom big signal AM monopoly.

Tom Bigby will guide Roth through choppy water. The muscle and tentacles of CBS Sports will be a great asset to its start-up sports FM in Cleveland. But Clear Channel will present a formidable challenge, particularly the dominance of 50 kW flame thrower 1100 WTAM which holds the rights to the Browns, Cavs and Indians, as well as a full stable of FMs on which to offer back-up support to WTAM.

The forthcoming scrum between CBS and Clear Channel will offer students and fans of radio battles the same stimulation and thrill offered by sports teams on the field. It would be no surprise if CBS' sports FM in Cleveland attempts to wrest at least one major league sports franchise from Clear Channel, most likely the Browns, when the radio rights contract is up for renewal. Let the games begin.

Good info, 9, and yes, we all expect CBS to go after the Browns rights, which are reportedly locked into Clear Channel (WMMS/WTAM) for another year or two - 2013 I've heard. CBS will no doubt open up the Brinks truck for that one.

As far as I know, it's the first of the three big teams to come up.

But you didn't answer my question...how long was Roth PD at WGR, and what did he do before that?

I'm not sure when Roth started at WGR, but it's been several years. It was his first PD gig according to LinkIn. Prior to WGR, his resume reads:

Multimedia Coordinator MLBAM
June 2000 – November 2003 (3 years 6 months)

Producer WFAN
1999 – 2000 (1 year)

Producer WMAQ
1997 – 1999 (2 years)

Producer One-on-One Sports
1996 – 1997 (1 year)

Producer WIP
1993 – 1996 (3 years)

Andy Roth's Education
University of Pennsylvania 1989 – 1993

It would appear that he drew the attention of somebody in Bala Cynwyd while working for Major League Baseball.

As to his time spent at WGR, I do not know. (Hey, there's a rarity for these boards.) A source closer to the situation says Roth was Entercom sports programming savant Jason Wolfe's man at WEEI before moving to Buffalo in '05, although the exact date is not confirmed. So ballpark it at 5+ years. We'll find out what he's made of when he takes on Clear Channel in Cleveland. This radio game can be great sport.
