Andy Wappler leaving KIRO Radio/TV in April

She's just sitting out the no-compete.

Meanwhile...I was totally offended by the picture in that "Shoreline" link. Good God, people.....a TEXAS A&M t-shirt on THIS high-brow site? Let's show a little more discretion, please....!!!!

..and guess who's gonna replace him as chief meterologist:

This is really O L D news....anyone who's in the business has known about this back in 2007. What's more telling and good for discussion really should be: "this a good move for KIRO TV ?"

I think not. The Wappler name has been around on KIRO since JP Patches was on the air there To kick Andy off is going to bite KIRO's ratings in the next year and beyond. I do not think that his replacement will ever amount to enough long-term numbers to make up for the loss in this deal.

The sad part about this business (particularly on the TV side) is that very good people often get thrown under the bus for a gimmick-type "1 shot silver bullet" that weak, unseasoned managers try to use and propagate to solve all their woes.

Clearly, KIRO-TV is desperate in this move and it shows. (being way down at #4 now overall) Pulling the cable news weather girl off cable ch 2 is a good move for her, not for KIRO TV in the long term.

Is he a victim of winter cutbacks?

Or is he moving on?

In Seattle We had Wappler Weather forecast before Doppler came to be. Andy was born a Wappler.

Andy's dad Harry Wappler held down the weather duties at KIRO TV for several decades. Harry retired either late 90's or early 00's. This will be the first time KIRO TV will be with out Wappler Weather in several decades.

I wonder if Bonneville would have jettisoned him if they still had the CH 7.

I can tell you he was pushed out......very sad indeed/

Sad - but unfortunately, that's the way things are today. With all due respect to Andy - having the Wappler name was both a blessing and a curse. People expected him to exude the warmth and charisma of his dad - and while Andy is a very articulate and accurate forecaster, he doesn't have that "spark" his dad had. If Andy stays in Seattle, perhaps Q13 will pick him up, but I don't see him moving to KOMO or KING.

Agreed. I felt when Harry retired and Andy was promoted to evenings that it was a risky career move. Andy comes across as this kinda geeky, talks with a lisp weatherman. He's good, but not good enough for evenings. If he'd stayed on the morning show, he'd probably still be at KIRO.

That being said, I don't think Rebecca Stevenson is the answer. She is very good looking, but she really isn't that talented. I've been watching her run out of time and speed through the last few graphics for years. And just like Andy, she doesn't have that much charisma. I figure she'll last through one contract and be shown the door.

I'd thought he would last a few more weeks - must have left early and burned up the rest of his sick leave. His bio is gone from the website.

It was a very good tribute - and they spun it so it looks like he left on his own terms. Both Andy and Margo were pretty emotional there at the end.

I liked the clip of JP pounding on the green screen trying to make the numbers fall off - just like he did to Harry's magnet board 35 years ago.

For much of the last 15 years, Seattle viewers woke up with three mets on the morning news - Rich Marriott, Todd Johnson, and Andy Wappler. In the last month, both Johnson and Wappler, who started about the same time and were probably about the same age when they started (late 20s), were shown the door. I guess Seattle's becoming more and more like other major markets. No stability, and if you're in your mid 40s, even if you've been working at the station for 15 years, you better start looking for a new career.

Are you serious? "15 years" and "no stability?" Is anything short of a lifetime considered long tenure?

How long has Jeff Renner (collectively, two stints) and Steve Pool been doing weather in Seattle?

Dan Lewis has been the lead guy at KOMO for over 20 years. Raible has been at KIRO for 25 years. Bounds has been at KING for nearly 20, and Jean Enersen anchored KING's coverage of the Abraham Lincoln assassination.

Let's face it, Andy Wappler made it to where he was because of his father's burlap coattails. Times have changed, and the nostalgia of being Harry Junior isn't there because people have either grown up or the thousands of people who have moved to Seattle over the past decade have no idea, nor care, who Harry Wappler is.

Todd Johnson was solid, but never took it to the next level. Maybe it had something to do with being behind one of Seattle TV's most popular faces. Someone earlier in this thread made a good description Johnson's talents.

If anything, there's more stagnation than a lack of stability in Seattle.

..no word yet as to any special broadcast for her on channel 5....stay tuned...

Wow, what a great thread. Nice work Dialtwisty on getting those links up ASAP. Maybe this board should change to "TV-Info".
