That's, uhhh, some pretty good selectivity on your MP3 player.

You should have tried AM radio. You might have picked up stations like KGO, KCBS, and even- get ready for this- KNBR.

If the island is where I think it is, the strongest AM signal just might be KFAX.

Or KTRB, since they now share a daytime tower site. As for that "pirate" on 88.1, that would be 17 watt KECG at El Cerrito High School.

No, because KFAX is directional to the northwest. Due west (270 degrees), KFAX's signal is equivalent to ~150 kW ND.

I'd put my money on KCBS being stronger than KFAX. Both transmitters are about the same distance from Angel Island, but KCBS has more (almost all) of it's path over salt water - the path from KFAX to AA is mostly over land until you get near the Bay Bridge. And KCBS has the equivalent of about 200 Kw going in that direction - the 25 mv/v contour (formerly required to encompass the City of License) extends past San Jose.

Huh? Using the ruler tool on Google Earth I can draw a straight line over water from the KFAX xmtr to Angel Island. Now it's true that there's a little bit of land northwest of KFAX, but after that it's all water up to Angel. However, it's significantly further from Angel to KFAX than to KCBS.

Surely there must be a shorter route to an AlAnon meeting than that.

And don't call me surely.
