You would know them if you spent any time in Phoenix listening to the radio. All are veterans of a time in this town when DJ's could spin what they wanted to, radio stations weren't all a part of a giant conglomerate, and you could count on good music.

If you were here when KSTM was playing, you'd remember.

RFP is the only good music left in Phoenix, its a labor of love by Andy and all the DJ's because they love radio, and they love being able to play what they like.

Hmmmm, have been in this town for 19 years (since the days of KEYX and KQ, may they both rest in peace), have listened to my fair share of all formats of radio (yes, including country, but no, not Spanish language), and still haven't heard of any of these people. Surfed over to the website, didn't recognize anyone. None of the songs caught my eye.

Gimme a station with Jonathan L, Mary McCann, and Leah Miller. Then we'll talk.

Yeah, it's a lot like KCDX 103.1 FM only better because there are personalities and a fair amount of community involvement going on.

from Nico fronting the Velvet Underground
to Nico Case fronting the New Pornographers, You have to posess a certain amount of musical sophistication to appreciate their musical diversity. Or as Andy Olsin calls it, "Deep tracks from the past and present".
There's stuff I've never even heard before. I like that. I also like the fact that they play (as Leah and Johnathan and Mary on KQ would call it) "New Stuff".

Musta sucked growing up in a lead mine. Its progressive deep track music. Meaning, that it may be a popular artist, but it might be cut 6 from one of their albums that was never a single, but the DJ thought was cool.

It might be a local band from a long time ago that still sounds cool. RFP actually plays comedy bits, from National Lampoon, Credibility Gap and Firesign Theatre.

That is damned cool. But, if you want to hear boring old corporate More Hits! and endless blithering on about 10 songs in a row (followed by 8 minutes of commercials) and utterly bland DJ's who have been straightjacketed in to playing what the consulting firm thinks is really neato and hip and is what little johnny and all the other cool kids must listen to, then go ahead, don't listen to RFP, its not aimed at your (lack of) taste.

Here's what the Germans are saying.......

"Radio Free Phoenix" spielt PopRock aus den 60er bis 90er Jahren und man kann mit 128 kbps zuhören. Die Tracks klingen sauber, werden ordentlich ausgespielt - und sind von Hand aufgelegt!!.

Je nach Tageszeit gibt es auch verschiedene Moderatoren - u.a. auch von einer sehr charmanten Frauenstimme (schwärm). Zumindest abends ab 20:00 Uhr ist Liz Boyle zu hören - Zitat: "I had a lovely voice!".

Man kann selbst als Gast DJ bei Radio Free Phoenix teilnehmen. Die eigenen 15 Songs werden jeden Samstag (Wdh. Sonntags) in der Show "Radio Freedom" gespielt. Per E-Mail sendet man seine 15 Titelvorschläge und einen Begleittext an den Sender. Ein Moderator spielt dann die Musik und liest den begleitenden Text vor. - näheres unter Shows bzw. Radio Freedom.

I keep myself comfy with the 7000 songs in my iPod, so I pretty much I program my own station. And, I'm sorry, but my comedic taste is a little bit more sophisticated and modern than National Lampoon. I mean, seriously, did you listen to it's brief life on KFYI? F***, that was painful.

If your entire world revolves around your Ipod (if you are an audiophile, you would have a MP3 player made by Creative, much better sound, no annoying file restrictions, and lower price).

So, if you have your precious ipod, why post here about radio? You are obviously above all us peons that listen to a station that we all enjoy and support.

As for the National Lampoon show on KFYI it sucked. I'm talking about the old days, in the 70's when NL and Credibility Gap, the Groundlings, Second City and all the other underground groups were doing seriously good comedy while crap like Sonny and Cher and The Tony Orlando and Dawn Show was the best comedy you could get on TV. This was pre Saturday Night Live, when guys like Belushi, Michael O'Donahue, Bill Murray, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Gilda Radner, Don Novello, Tom Gammil and Max Pross, and on on and on.

Its good stuff, give RFP a listen for a few hours and enjoy it.
