Angelo Cataldi leaving 610 WIP?

I am curious as to the reaction of the Michael Klien Inquirer story over the weekend about the possibility of 610 losing their morning man over a contract dispute. He has been here for so long, it would be a shock. At the same time, maybe it is time for someone new; although I do not vote for Big Daddy as a replacement.

THe morning show is beyond stale...time for a change..it better be a smart one with 97.5 getting modest exposure

Stale would denote that at one time this show was fresh.

Good riddance perv.

In light of the arrival of ESPN on FM - it is a good time to not only show this guy the door, but to re-vamp the entire presentation of the station. It is beyond stale - it really just plain sucks. Take a page from the highly succesful WFAN in NYC...which is a great station - and I'm a Philly sports fan. Very well done through each day part. Get rid of the WIP "guy talk" bull and embrace real sports talk. That means regular segments featuring coaches and players from Philly and around the nation talking sports. A need for better producing is something else that is needed. Too many regular callers (idiots) get on the air and they just dumb the whole thing down. If something new isn't done - and done very soon - WIP's days are numbered...Angelo must go. In fact, it's probably not a bad idea to clean house. Who would really miss Morganti, the Cuz, Maknow, Hugh Douglas???...please! BLOW IT UP! Angelo must go...Angelo must go...Angelo must go...

This is strictly a contract ploy as his agent is trying to get Greater Media to engage in some sort of bidding war for Angelo's alleged talents. It won't work and Angelo will have to scrape by on the 1-mil or so a year. It'll be interesting to see if Infinity low balls him to stay using the "economy" as the main reason. Many top paid talents have taken cuts just to keep their jobs and it's time Cataldi got a taste of that reality. No one has made more money with less talent in Philly than this guy.
As for the show and WIP being "stale". Totally true, but this is Philadelphia and the audience is parochial and not willing to change. It's why Channel 6 "action news" stays on top despite a very bored looking Jim Gardner running down the nightly North Philadelphia crime and 2 alarm fires.
Philly will never listen to a strictly sports station and to it's credit, the reason WIP gets ratings is twofold. No real competition - until now - and people don't want to hear athletes and hard-core sports interviews and breakdowns. Philly has no legit talk stations that really compete for the local audience and the FM competition is lame at best. WIP wins by default and why would they break it up and lose what they've spent 20 years building?

I have been a listener to WIP since the weekend Buddy Ryan was fired. However, I have tuned out the last few years after I bought satellite radio. However, I began listening again during the Phillies playoffs and it is a better product than it was about 3 years ago. They do have regular sport guests/experts come on and talk, which is something that was never done in the old Bigby days. If I am not mistaken, it seems that they focus more on sports talk now than they have in the past. I really think it was during the OJ trial that WIP started the move towards a guy talk station. That was different way back when, but I do like to listen to good sports talk. I do not want anything close to the old Big Game/1210 format (or whatever it was called) as that was way too much without any substance.

I think WIP is trying to find the right balance esp. considering that there is competition from 950am. I think Eskin should be solo, but I agree that they have to reduce the number of 'idiot' callers. Weekends with Ray Didinger are great. It is also better that the Phillies are good, because it was focused way too much on the Eagles even though I am a huge fan. Some on WIP have to stop the 'is this a football or baseball town' talk. Who cares? Heck, I love the 76ers talk as well right now.

BTW - Does anyone remember the first live overnight local-only show on WIP - Rod and the Lady Rae? Whatever happened to them?

Great points...Ray Didinger is a perfect example - this is what they should be doing and how WIP should sound = informative, interesting and professional. For the most part the station is a rough listen 24/7...

Personalities come and go .. there's always someone hungry waiting in the wings.... there's probably a million guys that want the job and will do it for cheap... Seeing it from an owner's perspective, as I own a station, I would let him go. This is the best time to do it .. it saves face for the station and allows for positive change... with the economy as it is, savings are especially important ..

Didn't Cataldi do this the last time his contract was up? It seems like one of his little schticks like Howard Stern used to do until he made his threat real and jumped to satellite. Cataldi needs to realize that with a bad economy and an up-and-coming competitor in the market, now is not the time to be calling someone's bluff.

I know this was an old post but I saw the title and got all excited... and I guess it's not true or he'd be gone by now. His junior-high school boy humor is way beyond old and he is way beyond old to be going there. Ray Didinger is the only person worth listening to on the station. I'm glad 950 moved to FM and has made its programming so much more interesting. If only WIP would do the same. The morning show is unbearable and as for Eskin, I can't figure out how he even got a job in sports talk because he seems to know so much less than anyone else on that station.

Oh well.... maybe some other year.

we has 950 that does that. why have 2 station doing the same thing??? wip is fine with their rotation. its the personalities that bother me. i like eskin and all but its time for something new. ike reese isnt ready yet to take over but lets add new blood.

and a lil rant by me....... im sick and tired of coming home at night and having to ask myself if big daddy graham is on or not. i swear this guy takes more days off than anyone i have ever seen doing a job. why have the job if he only woks half the time? i love this guy doing the overnight for them but is it worth it if he's always having health issues?

Now, deals are likely to be made for the rest of the gang (Al, Rhea, Jonesy, et al).

they need to get rid of some people on that show
i can never understand whats being said because theres too many people talking
