ANKARLO ON KLIF DEPARTURE

Building a House Without the Tools

My run at KLIF has been one of the most rewarding in my radio career; we did so many great things with smoke and mirrors that I will be just as proud of the way we accomplished the tasks as I was with the task themselves. The standing line in the broadcasting industry was that a few dreamers with limited resources had resurrected a powerful beast and indeed we had. I recount the story of one summer day while filling in for a live show (I had not accepted any offers to join the KLIF staff yet) and only about 15-20 people were in the audience. A few years later we routinely had thousands.

I think he just described a typical day at CUME-LESS :D

He most certainly did describe a typical day at Cumulus! ;D

Then, came May of 2006--our company was sold to another and overnight my little station that had barely anything to work with was now scraping by with absolutely nothing. Program Director--gone. Promotions Director--gone. Sales Manager--gone. General Manager--gone. Afternoon Drive Host--gone. Producer--gone. Sound Man--gone. Soon, it became evident that KLIF was in a world of hurt none of us thought possible and it seemed like it was only going to get worse.

Made a few phone calls to check this out...
Program director gone? Since replaced.
Promotions director gone? Since replaced.
Sales manager gone? Since replaced.
General manager gone? Good riddance from what I'm told. Nobody could figure out what he did all day anyway.
Afternoon drive host gone? Well, yeah, but gee Darrell, Knapp didn't leave till a month or so ago. So how did you look around in May 2006 and see that your PM drive host was gone? Psychic much? Or spinning the truth to make the story better? Either way, since replaced.
Producer gone? Since replaced
"Sound man"? Is that the guy that (according to my sources) nobody knew the guy was still on the payroll? And when they found out he wasn't producing a show or board-op-ing a show, they let him go? THAT sound guy?

And how many of those people were fired versus quit? Jeff Hillary left for a better job. You make it sound like new owners cleaned house and left you with nothing. Not exactly the truth, is it? When did that Petiti chick quit? Didn't she make it through the ownership change?

Resurrected a powerful beast? A 1.8 is a resurrection? Indeed it wasn't.

there's no P.D. even now, dude.. a board-op was P.D. for a short time!! Ankarlo didn't want to go, you know..

They've got some guy who answer the phone when you ask for the PD...and I'm pretty sure he's not a board op.
Came from some talk station in Kansas...

All the departed knew when CUMU-LESS was taking over it was just a matter of time. Slowly the "Tools" were being taken away. CUMULUS Mentality was settling in.

Having worked at several local stations in sales, I'll give you a ratings primer. 12+ means cow doo. I can tell you that Ankarlo was as high as #5 or 6 at one time 35-64, which is where the news/talkers in town get most of their numbers and how you make cash. As I recall, KLIF was a joke before he and Dr. Laura showed up. We all had a good laugh at KRLD, but then didn't when KLIF started beating us 25-54 (and beating us with two of our old shows, O'Reily and Laura to boot). They wound up taking second to WBAP 25-54 and 35-64 and started making millions instead of losing em every year. I'd guess Ankarlo in the morning made up a good chunk of that money in testimonials spots.

I can no longer resist..... The following story was told by Ankarlo while his son was on-duty in Iraq and as Ankarlos's book was being released.

Not sure of the exact time and date, but two chinook helicopters with Marines had taken off. One was hit by a SAM, killing all on board.

Ankarlo states that his son called from Iraq after the incedent.

::)"Dad, I was supposed to be on that helicoper".

"What happened, son"?

"At the last second I was moved to the other helicopter, but all my gear was on the helicopter that went down. Only two items from my gear were recovered. A tattered us flag and a blood soaked copy of your book, dad."

"Son, you bring that book home".
