Anne Francis (TV's Honey West) Dies

Eerie that her passing came just as Turner Classic Movies was re-running Forbidden Planet...

Corky, thanks for that reference. I was having a little trouble picturing her in my mind. My daughter and I were just talking about how much we love the episode of the Twilight Zone. What a beautiful lady, may be rest in peace.

I remember a few years back there was talk of remaking "Honey
West" as a movie, although without Ms. Francis. Since the show
lasted only one season (1965-66) she expressed great pleasure
that so many people still remembered the show. BTW, for those
who may have forgotten, the character was introduced on an episode
of "Burke's Law".

Yes - she was beautiful, and a very underrated actress, in my opinion. She was very versatile, and was very good at playing sensitive multi-faceted women.

After barely a decade of moderate success in films (50s and early 60s), she worked mostly in episodic TV. She worked steadily, and I'm sure had an income that would be the envy of most Americans. But I can't help thinking that if she would be a major film star today, now that women are getting better roles.

Though I obviously can't prove it, I believe Anne Francis definitely could have held her own with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts, Clare Danes, etc.

Maybe showing my age, but as a kid I always had a crush on Anne Francis.

I too thought that Anne Francis was one beautiful woman, as I did Elizabeth Montgomery. Not only did both possess beauty but could act. Unlike some of these botox-silicon laden so-called actresses today.

I'm still trying to figure out what's the big deal with Paris Hilton and Snookie? Those two couldn't hold a candle to Liz and Anne.

AMEN!

Paris Hilton,Jessica Simpson and the like are the poorest haphazard excuses for actresses I have ever seen...the biggest overrated hype I have seen in decades (remember Tuesday Weld?)

I remember as a twelve year old watching Anne Francis on Honey West and at that age I thought she was indeed a sexy young woman in her day...who can also act well with the best of them. I thought it was a groundbreaking show in a day when The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and other male-dominated espionage and spy shows basically snubbed female TV slueths. There was also a Honey West doll/action figure produced by toymaker Gilbert to complement the James Bond action figure. I remember those commercials on The Beatles Saturday morning animated series produced by Al Brodax and King Features for ABC.

You forgot to mention that both Anne Francis and Elizabeth Montgomery had class and style.
One can't say the same thing for Paris Hilton.

I have no idea who this Snookie or Schnookie is? Must be another lightweight creation of some TV network executive.

I doubt he was trying to compare Anne Francis and Elizabeth Montgomery to Paris and Snookie. There are many classy actresses today - Paris and Snookie are merely "celebrities." They used to categorize this type of celebrity as "famous for being famous."

In the 50s thru the 70s, people like this - with little talent or class - would show up on the many afternoon and late night talk shows - Merv Griffin, Joey Bishop, Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, etc.

Not surprisingly, I can think of very few people from that era that I would put in this category - probably because they were so forgettable. One was Zsa Zsa Gabor. I know she's very sick now, and I'm not trying to knock her when she's down - but she never had any descernible talent - couldn't sing, dance, act, or write books. And she never had anything particularly interesting to say, "dahhlinng." But she was a "celebrity" who was famous for being Zsa Zsa.

But come to think of it, she still had more class than Paris Hilton.

...I've seen Tuesday Weld in Pretty Poison, A Safe Place, Serial and Once Upon a Time in America. Damned good performances all. The woman is most certainly not an "overrated hype" and hardly deserves to be compared to Hilton or Simpson...

Me-TV in Chicago had a tribute to her, and I believe they're running Honey West on weekends. I think they went national, so if you're a fan of hers keep an eye out for it. And, yes, that was an excellent T-Zone episode. Don't forget The Fugitive with Charles Bronson. (Side note: From what very little I blissfully know of that very little Snooki person, she should go back to the chocolate factory.)

And the likes of Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, and Lindsay Lohan
can take the Kardashians with them when they fade back into
obscurity: what, exactly, is it that they do? I'd also be grateful
not to see Jennifer Aniston in what seems to be every other new
movie.

Otherwise I'm in total agreement that Anne Francis, Elizabeth Montgomery,
and some other actresses of the '50s, '60s, and '70s had class as well as
looks and talent (I have to include my personal favorite, Joanna Barnes,
even if she did tend to play bitchy parts). I'd add Mary Tyler Moore,
Suzanne Pleshette, Hope Lange, Florence Henderson, and Shirley Jones.

And as for Zsa Zsa she didn't show up on talk shows because of her talent
or intelligence; Merv (in particular) could simply ask her what she'd been doing
lately and she'd talk until the next commercial break. That, if the guest is also
amusing, is a talk-show host's dream.
