Annette Funicello Passes Away at 70

In an interview on "Fresh Air from WHYY," Annette told Terry Gross that she was under contract to Disney and loaned to AI. Walt personally suggested (requested) she not wear a bikini and that she accepted. She seemingly felt free to decline his request and accepted his judgement. She spoke of "Mr. Disney" with great respect and agreed that a one-piece would be better suited for her wholesome image.

Yet I saw her in a beach movie where she was wearing a two-piece bathing suit. She may have worn this outfit after Walt Disney passed away in 1965.

Also she tried to change her TV image by appearing in an episode of "Burke's Law" wearing what was described, at the time, as a 'go-go' outfit and playing a character not associated with her "good girl" image. The reaction from the public was negative so she went back to being 'Annette."

Is this story true??

Yes. Uncle Walt was wrapped pretty tight when it came to displaying Annette's assets and she herself used to comment she was not allowed to show her belly button. In fact, she giggled, there was some speculation that it was because she didn't have one.

She did occasionally appear in a two-piece but not a bikini.

I've often wondered what the rest of the Mickey Mouse Club members thought of all the attention Annette was receiving?

While a few of the group went on to adult careers in show business (Johnny Crawford, Don Grady and Bobby Burgess) most of the mouseketeers careers in show business ended when the show went off the air.

Jeannie was not allowed to show her navel either and she did not work for Disney. That was a network ruling.

IIRC, Jeannie did initially show her navel, but after numerous complaints from the more blue-nosed members of the viewing public, "Standards and Practices" made her cover up.

For a few years at the end of the aughts, my (then) teenage daughter was a fan of the Disney Channel shows. I noticed that even then - 50 years after Annette, the Disney girls kept their midriffs covered, with none of that short-top, low pants look that has been so popular.
