A small AM station here in NJ, 1590 WERA, claimed for years to be transmitting in AM Stereo, when they never actually did. When I finally got a C-Quam receiver in 1995 I discovered they were mono, but thought that maybe they were using the Kahn system, which they had to stop using when the FCC made C-Quam the standard. But later a former engineer for the station spilled the beans that WERA never transmitted in AM Stereo of any kind -- the DJs just made it up.

Announcing Playing a CD on AM radio (WLS-AM)

When I finally got a C-Quam receiver in 1995 I discovered they were mono, but thought that maybe they were using the Kahn system, which they had to stop using when the FCC made C-Quam the standard. But later a former engineer for the station spilled the beans that WERA never transmitted in AM Stereo of any kind -- the DJs just made it up.
Looks like the board op forgot to alcohol swab the heads! Too much oxide on the heads or capstans can cause jams.
They were also a classic rocker with those calls. I came across a "CD-94.7 Chicago's Classic Rock" T-shirt today when going through my old shirts I had put away.
94.7 in Chicago was going through quite a few changes in the 90s and early 2000's. It wasn't until around 2005-06 when they went to "oldies" that they finally settled on a format that worked for them.
The "Wheel of Formats" is one of the reasons I actually found 94.7 interesting. You never knew on any given day whether or not you'd turn the station on and hear a new format on the air. Nowadays, I just listen 'cause I like the music.
In the 90s they had a talk format for awhile. It didn't last long.
