I used to have this problem on an older Realistic portable, but only when the radio was plugged in (which means of course that it was running through its internal AC transformer/adapter). On 890 WLS, a flamethrower where I live, the hum was nasty. On AM 1000, slightly less. On any other station it was fine. For whatever reason, that radio just didn't deal well with very strong signals.
