Annoying TV Commercials 2013 Edition

Back to KMART. I swear SHC is deliberately trying to get people not go to KMART. Several of their recent commercials have been so stupid they are turn-offs. They don't make me want to go there to shop and I'm not just saying that because I work for Walmart. The latest one is the "Gifting Out" commercial for their night time Thanksgiving Sale. UGH!

For those of you who have not seen the KMART "Gifting Out" commercial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zNZ_0Mp9ZI - This is one of several versions of the commercial.

The latest I find annoying is the newest JCPenney Christmas commercial, where there are carolers in someone's home, singing to shop, shop, shop, on Thanksgiving night. It's bad enough that stores are open on Thanksgiving, but to actually flaunt it. Not sure JCPenney thought this one out, since they're on the verge of bankruptcy, & possibly liquidation, thanks to Ron Johnson & this failed everyday low prices plan, & his hasty remodeling of the store within a store format, that didn't work out.

Still, that's a stupid thing. Thanksgiving night should be reserved for employees to enjoy time with their families and have turkey. Thanksgiving sure is a misfit holiday nowadays - most stores go from Halloween decorations straight to Christmas.

The stores are open Thanksgiving Night in hopes of preventing some of the tragedies that have happened in years past - people getting trampled, etc.

Opening Thanksgiving night (or Thanksgiving Day as Kmart, Meijer since my area Meijer stores are 24 hours, & even the 24 hour Walmart stores were open Thanksgiving Day, 24 hours) isn't gonna stop people from trampling over people to get the hot items. If someone is that desperate, they'll even go as far as taking away someone's ticket or wristband (regardless of type of force), just to try & claim the hot items themselves. I saw someone trying to grab someone's tickets in line at Best Buy last year, while I was waiting to get in the store myself. I only went out, because my nephew was staying with me, & I needed a new DSL modem/router, as the DSL modem I bought only allowed 1 hookup (no Wi-Fi), & I needed to be able to allow 2 computers to be hooked to the internet. I did get a 24" Insignia 1080p HDTV, only after 6 tickets were left, & I took one. I put mine in my pocket while waiting in line. Others held them in their hands, while others were desperate for some of the same stuff. Getting in the store also presented its own challenges, as certain hot items were on the floor, & people tried to steal out of other people's carts. I paid for my DSL modem/router, & the TV in the checkout line for the TV's only, then picked up the TV in the back of the store (computers, stereos, & a few other items had to be picked up in the back of the store, reducing chances of fights for those hot items). Luckily, I had no need to go to Best Buy this year. I wasn't excited at all for much of the stuff, that except for a few things from Walmart (6pm doorbusters, but the not so hot items that lasted 4 hours or more in stock), I otherwise took a pass. For the first time, I even took a pass on Kmart for even Thanksgiving Day, as they had nothing I needed or wanted.

That depends on your area I remember 20 years ago back in the 1990's Black Friday was at 5-6am at the malls. then 10 years ago they moved it to 11pm-midnight now its depends between 4-6pm Thanksgiving day.

In some areas, 10 years ago 6-7AM openings were really common on Black Friday. It wasn't until about five years ago that the "Midnight" openings happened, and then a couple of years ago it went into late Thanksgiving night. Disgusting. Next thing you know it will be 6AM on Thanksgiving Day.

I think I saw that commercial, too, but Cool Springs Galleria (yes, that's right, the actual mall itself!) ran a similar commercial saying that they would be open at 8:00 on Thanksgiving night! (Grrrr....!!)

I agree with what the last four or five of you have posted here. Merchants have gradually forced the holiday shopping season on us earlier and earlier every year. The "black Friday came later this year" excuse is just b.s. As some of you have said, they started earlier last year, too, and Thanksgiving was November 22nd last year. So they need a new excuse.

I saw (on the news) some computer graphics of how Wal-Mart planned to handle the rush of black Friday shoppers. It reminded me of those zig-zag lines at amusement parks and other such places. Wal-Mart employees (oops, "associates") were to wear reflector vests and sort of serve as "traffic cops" to direct customers and supposedly keep things orderly, but since these folks are paid minimum wage, and many of them are "seasonal," how effective can they be? If any of you were brave enough to brave Wal-Mart this morning, let us know how it went!

Well Its Thanksgiving week Expect a barrage of Supermarket ads to show up today for deals on the Perfect Thanksgiving dinner. Then on Wednesday Expect TV News crews at the malls for Black Week. Some Malls in your area may be open as early as 5pm Thanksgiving day in Some areas that might be 12-5am on Friday Morning. But Expect "Discount ads" to be X% off. Geez we really do need to look at ourselves in the mirror more "camping outside malls to be the 'first' guy to get stuff" That is odd here. The Majority of people at the malls standing there need to realize that they are not victims of a disaster like Typhoon Yolanda or Tornado from Illinois or a homeless person who needs to go to the food bank in San Francisco just because he has no house, no job and no family

*Black Friday, Thanksgiving: the vultures are already lined up and it's only Sunday. I would love just one, 1!, media outlet here, SF, to merely open their broadcast with a real news story and offer a quick glimpse of the schlubs at the local Walmart but that'll happen when Tom Raponi and Lee Rosenthal sing Hey Jude.
*Your basic handbook to local TV News Thursday: 1. 4-minute package at Glide Memorial. 2. Talk to 2-3 folks standing in line and waiting for meal. 3. Get the obligatory five-second actuality of volunteer who took time from family to serve the poor. 4. Close out live shot with obligatory reporter telling anchor that Glide serves thousands of meals everyday, not just Thanksgiving.
Here's a thought: why not be creative?!! No knock on Glide and St. Anthony or all the various charitable churches and outreaches which feed the poor, the homeless, on Thanksgiving. Why not do the newscast DIRECT from Glide. If you're going to exploit, and I'm sorry, this is exploitation when you really look at it, shut up, put your money where your mouth is and give $50 grand to the church, all of you, (KNTV, KGO, KTVU, KPIX,); then at least your usual cliché-driven, overbearing, disingenuous opener on Turkey Day adds some real meat to the presentation and isn't another standardized stuffer. And then Glide has the cash to get more stuffing too so see, it works.
Don't forget the annual visit to the local airport on the day before Thanksgiving ("traditionally the busiest travel day of the year") to remind us how "busy" the airport is this year. Did not look particularly busy here in Nashville.

In 1987 Rose's (sort of like Kmart in NC) was open Thanksgiving.

I was stuck on I-80 East from Fairfield,CA to Sacramento it seemed to be more like I-405 Freeway at rush hour or I-880 at Rush Hour. But I Understand San Francisco Bay Area, Reno and Tahoe people use Sacramento, Yolo Counties and Solano as Gas Stops before going to Union Square in San Francisco and Gamble in Tahoe and Reno.

Thank God that BBC News did not air that much of Black Friday they aired a Protest in Thailand and EU Deal today. The Local News here in the USA did shadow traffic of Freeways going to the mall. Well Local News here became too much PR for the malls over % deals off(KTVU did a Mall story) and Local stringers filming Squashed people at the mall. Come on Guys You ain't Typhoon victims in the Philippines, You are not Refugees from Syria, Victims of Illinois Tornadoes, the Homeless, Jobless at a Local Food Bank in your area.

My local Wal-Mart around 9:30 this morning - Doorbusters everywhere, but little traffic. Was really nice! Check-out lady told me that at 6PM last night (when the big doorbusters happened) it was a madhouse - people everywhere getting TVs, phones and toys.

The Joe Boxer Jingle Bell commercial is so lame

In my area, Kmart & Meijer have been open on Thanksgiving Day for many years. I'm not aware of any communities in Meijer's markets having any type of blues laws that would prevent them from being open on Thanksgiving, or even 24 hours. So in my immediate area, Meijer is only closed from 7pm Christmas Eve to 6am December 26. The rest of the time, the store is open 24 hours the other 362 days (363 on leap years). I say 362 days, because Christmas Eve, they're only open 19 hours, closed all day Christmas Day, & December 26th, open 18 hours. So Meijer holds a Thanksgiving Day sale, Black Friday sale, & a Saturday only sale around Thanksgiving.

For Kmart, They're open on Thanksgiving Day with Thanksgiving Day sales, except for communities with blues laws (or in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, & Maine, blues laws against Thanksgiving Day business in the entire state & other holidays). Where they can, they're holding Thanksgiving Day sales, Black Friday, & a 3 day sale. It'll be the other stores that might push for Thanksgiving to be Black Thursday, & Friday to be an afterthought. I say Walmart will likely be the one that will push for Thanksgiving Day to be Black Thursday than Kmart, then Target will follow Walmart at it too. As for 4 of my area Walmart stores (3 superstores & 1 regular Walmart) that are 24 hours, they did not close on Thanksgiving Day at all, but waited until 6pm to hold their doorbuster sales. The 2 Hammond Indiana Walmart stores (1 regular & 1 superstore) were closed on Thanksging Day, but opened at 6pm Thanksgiving evening. Not sure how late they stayed open, since those stores are normally open from 6am - midnight daily.

Kmart is wasting their money airing those afore-mentioned "gifting out" ads. I take it that those are national network spots. The nearest Kmart to me is the one that I previously mentioned down in south Nashville (yes, the one that is closing!), and I now live AT LEAST a half-hour's drive away from that one! Not only that, but some of these ads continued to air last night, too late to even take advantage of their advertised "black Friday" deals!

If it's cheaper to air an ad nationally than regionally or locally, then a business will do that. I remember my local TV stations blocking out certain national ads for businesses that weren't in my area, & insert local ads in its place. For the 6 network stations in my area, they have the capability to do that, & make it clean cut. Maybe your local TV stations doesn't have that capability. Until Kmart exits enough markets to where it's cheaper to market regionally, then you'll find ads for businesses that aren't in your area, & that will include Kmart. My county is down to just 2 Kmart stores, & the county to the east, & the one east of that, are down to just 1 store each. The one that's over 40 miles from my house, is in a store that was a different discounter from the 1950's & 1960's, & has a darker look to the store than what Kmart opened from the ground up in the 1960's & 1970's. The floors in that store even have avocado green tiles, which was popular in the 1960's & 1970's, & no Kmart store from the ground up ever had avocado green floor tiles, or square fluorescent light fixtures that that are spaced out 20 feet & more, making the store poorly lit inside.

Even if I wanted to drive across town to go to Kmart, I still don't have a time machine so that I could go back and take advantage of their black Friday specials. I continued to see these commercials on Friday night, as I said earlier.

Also notice that sometimes, car dealers also continue to run certain ads even after it is too late to possibly take advantage of whatever sale that they happen(ed) to be promoting, but this might be a scheduling issue with the TV stations.
