Another 90s Based CHR - Gen X Radio 100.5 Louisville

http://www.genxlouisville.com/main.html

Somewhat following in the footsteps of Sacramento's 106.5 The Buzz is the new Gen X Radio 100.5 in Louisville. The difference between the two stations? Mainly that Gen X will throw some music from 1987-89 as well as a few records from the Y2K.

it debuted yesterday and it's sounding pretty good so far.

CHRles,

Great station! Listened to it all the way to my family reunion through my blackberry, FM transmitter and good ole Verizon Wireless!! I love technology. My favorite three stations are 94.5 The Vibe, this new Gen X Radio and Detroit's new 1067 which is an awesome Rhy Hot AC. But I agree, this new Gen X is great! Loved just about every song they were putting out.

Its a dope azz radio station, I heard it on the way home today, I get it at my house in the car somewhat.. Its even Dance friendly I just came through Louisville a few hours ago, they even played the 96 remix of bizzare inc- im gonna get you...

Also,, 107.9 the track in indianapolis is heading in that direction as well.

Horrible... that's all I can say. The selection of music ranges from decent hits that have been completely burned out on Hot AC for the last 15 years to songs I never liked in the first place! ...and I am in the age group who is supposed to like this! I graduated from high school and college in the '90s and these songs make me cringe! Oh wow, Seal is on with "Crazy"... gee, I haven't heard this in at least 5 days.

Not my experience with this station. I enjoyed it enough to leave it on for over an hour (really big for me!). To each his own.

I graduated in 99 and love it. I call it retro chr or classic chr... I grew up when grunge was blowing up, as well as rap and euro dance, so this station is great for me,,, seems to target 25-34 yr old males,,,,, to a lesser extent females....

Maybe that's it. Maybe I'm too old for the format. I'm 34 so I would be at the top end of the demo. I loved grunge too (still do actually) but I'm not hearing any of it on these stations besides the occasional "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

By the way I think calling it "Retro CHR" is stretching it. I think this should be "Adult Hits" or "'90s Classic Hits" or something.

The problem is the Adult Hits term is already associated with Jack FM, which plays music from several decades, and leans Rock.
The problem with Classic Hits is that it implies Oldies wheras Retro implies it's something not too old. Besides, even though it's geared at 18-34 year old Adults it's not really an AC format as there's harder Rock, high energy Dance, and Hip Hop hits thrown in the mix.

I'm 38, graduated high school in 89 and I love this station, though I'm not right in their demo. I think Retro CHR does indeed capture what it is. It reminds me exactly of what was being played on CHRs in the late 80s and 90s. Perfect title.

It reminds me of my elementary school days. The CHR hits that my parents wouldn't let me listen to.

Hopefully it stays on the air through Thanksgiving, when I will be in Louisville.

I actually really like this station too. And it sounds like they've gotten even better the past few days by adding more rhythmic 90's titles. I think musically, it's right on target, plus the imaging is far better than The Buzz in Sacramento or K-Hits in Little Rock. The "deadpan" delivery is perfect (and harkens back to the late Keith Eubanks style that dominated radio in the 90's). I'm 39, so I'm squarely in the middle of "Generation X" (even though they say they aim 18-34, Generation X actually would be more like 26-46 right now according to the official definition of the generation. I think it's roughly people born between 1963-1983 according to stats.), and this is a format, that I'd definitely listen too.

Probably my next favorite 90's/Gen X type station that hasn't been mentioned yet is the HD2 channel of WBZW "B94" Pittsburgh. They do a format on HD 2 called "93-7 The Blast" with the tagline "the greatest party songs ever played on B94". It's a cool mixture of uptempo stuff from the 80's to today, with a heavy 90's focus. It tends to lean rhythmic, but also has some rock stuff thrown in as well. Anyway, it kind of fits in with this format as well, and personally, it would be an interesting format for CBS to try on a main frequency somewhere.

I think with the Generation X demos now being in the middle of the prime 25-54 numbers, we will see more of these types of stations popping up. It's just a natural progression for gold based formats (Oldies->Classic Hits->Adult Hits/Jack->Gen X./90s).

I think its the best station to hit Louisvville since WDJx first started... Next to z rock in virgie-Pikeville-Prestonsburg,, its the best station in ky, and you know im more of a chr-dance fan...... that should tell you something.

I thought the "Gen X" label belonged to the grung rockers of the 90s. Just seems like a rhythmic leaning 90s station should be appropriately titled "G radio," "Da Bomb" or "funky fresh" IMO.

I would have named it "100.5 The X". Even though I'm in Generation X by my birth year (1979) under most definitions, I really identify more with Generation Y.

A lot of my friends who were born between 1980-1984 love this station, and they only fit Generation X under the widest of definitions.
