Yet another modification for the northwest San Antonio LPFM hopper... This one's bouncing up to twice it's HAAT and it's also now got a 2-bay antenna.
Signal wise I think it's still overpowered. It's still very strong and covers a lot of distance, probably causes issues for KPPC...
Programming wise it's not really an LPFM. It's more a commercial station with no community announcements unless you count spots for businesses.
Right now it's the only LPFM receivable at my NW location, but if KXZL makes it on the air that will change.

Keep in mind community announcements are not a requirement for LPFM stations, but it is always nice to talk about the area you are serving. Sometimes just getting the information is like pulling teeth until you become known. Until you make the list of contacts for that non-profit wanting you to announce their events, you are invisible. For many stations, it is more important to get enough Underwriting to stay on the air versus recruit public service announcements you most air for no compensation.

And with that being said, the FCC is pretty restrictive on what a non-commercial station can announce. A general rule of thumb, without getting complicated, is any announcement that provides support for any group or their chosen recipient is not permitted. For example, you can announce meetings and activities but if it is to attend an auction to benefit a cancer patient's astronomical medical bills, for example, you are taking airtime to benefit an entity/person which is not allowed. If you notice, after the Haiti earthquake, the FCC offered a Public Notice allowing non-commercial stations to run announcements to benefit the victims of the earthquake. Generally, and fundraiser is a no-no, not matter how humanitarian or beneficial it might be. It can be a news story in an actual newscast but from a 'reporting' angle versus 'promotional' angle.

KXTJ-LP San Antonio

I am able to receive signal from KXTJ and have listened for sometime now. The signal is louder and crisper as of yesterday. I don't notice any signal strength as I drive around, However, I notice KPPC comming in on 410 South and S. Zarzamora. It seems as if they are broadcasting more than the allotted 100 watts ERP.

Both KPPC and KXTJ are broadcasting community announcements, KPPC with its one christian song at the top of the hour and KXTJ with distracted driving PSA's played during day and night. I have heard underwriting on KXTJ and it sounds like they are pretty much following the rules and regs i.e. no calls to action or pricing. LPFM is about to get interesting especially with translators switching on.

I hear both KXTJ and KPPC in areas I never thought they would reach. I was going to apply for a license but we missed the boat. Did alot of research on what is allowed and not allowed. Some mentions may sound to commercial but if you stick to the basics you'd probably be ok. In this relm I beleive all should just get along. There are a few LPFMs I know of in California that just dont get along with each other. If there are any LPFMs hin San Antonio needing a show, I'd be interested.
