Another AM Syndicated Talk Station Coming Along

Art Astor's AM properties 1510 KSPA and 1450 KFSD, in conjunction with Cable Radio Networks, will launch a new talk format come Monday featuring Mancow, Laura Ingraham, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Michael Savage, along with Doug McIntyre’s Red-Eye Radio live for four hours beginning at 10 p.m.

Think there will be much of an impact on the 1510 signal from Ontario?

It looks like the (night) signal goes through the San Gabriel Valley area
and some of the western Inland Empire, so perhaps the presence of
Red-Eye Radio live on KSPA will encourage KABC to dump the 15-hour
old Scarborough show and run McIntyre live 10 PM-2 AM also.

1510 is not just a bad, highly directional signal, it is located smack in the center of the ratings "no man's land" of Ontario, Fontana and adjacent towns... that area, with about 800,000 people, is not rated in the LA or the IE MSA. (Thanks to RadioResearcher for pointing this out to me several years ago)

The only time I listen to KSPA is to catch the Lakers broadcast. They were added as the I.E. affiliate when the Lakers went to KSPN because of 710's poor signal in the Inland Empire.

Not to worry, Art Astor never stays with a format with these stations very long, oldies , standards, 80s and 90s hits etc.My thinking is that it takes awhile for a format to gain traction with listeners, but for some reason Art has done very well by flipping formats every year or so. Remember what he did to George Putnam?

"Art Astor never stays with a format with these stations very long, oldies , standards, 80s and 90s hits etc." taking a cue from the Saul Levine playbook :)

Trouble is that when I go out to the IE, KSPA is one of the few stations out there that I used to like with the standards.

Leaves only (I believe) Radio Disney and Retro 1260 playing AM english language music in LA and IE.

Yeah, just like Saul Levine with 1260 and 540.

Best thing about this is that listeners in the I.E. will be able to hear Doug McIntyre’s Red-Eye Radio live for four hours 10pm - 2 am on 1510 am. KABC airs it live 12-2am and the 1st hour replay 2-3am. Courtesy of LARadio.com

Yeah, just like Saul Levine with 1260 and 540.

If however, Saul and Art had combined forces while the News Talk format was on 1260/540 then it might have had a greater chance. The combined coverage of 1260, 1450, and 1510 would have filled in a lot of holes and saved the cost of whatever Saul paid to lease 540 in Mexico.

Even now the Retro format from 1260 might fly better on the combined forces of the three stations.

Thanks for that info, as I was under the impression that it was the first
three hours all on delay 12-3 AM on KABC.

Either way, 10 PM-2 AM with all four hours live is still better, and direct
competition to C2CUFOs ;) on 64/KFI.
