Another BIG debate bash by KFYI at Tubby Keith's BAR somewhere

I think it is MESA, all the Sharpe fans will be there. Looks like they are really stimulating the economy.

They're interacting with listeners and not hiding behind the facade of social media? No way-! Shut the front door!

KTAR is constantly present and interacting with listeners around the community. KFYI? Rarely... they're owned by Clear Channel.

Non sequitur.

And "constantly"? Not nearly as much as they talk amongst themselves at the exclusion of any listener input. Facebook isn't PPM. Twitter isn't PPM. And Bonneville without social media is seriously up a certain creek. Needless to say, if Clear Channel ran KFYI like how Bonneville runs KTAR...

"Constantly" ? They haven't taken a phone call since, what, January? They were out talking to people following the first two debates, although I would barely count the first one as they were in Colorado! Not exactly the "voice of Arizona". I'm taking your "constantly" statement and rejecting it, as three times per year (assuming they'll interact with listeners following Monday's debate) doesn't meet the benchmark for "constantly".

I also love that KTAR runs promos using the positioner "Talk the vote". More like "monologue the vote" or "a bunch of conservative, non-dissenting opinions discuss how Mitt Romney always wins". Yeah yeah, KFYI has the same conservative, bloviating talkers, but at least with listener interaction there's a SMALL chance for a different opinion... on KTAR though... notsomuch.

I miss the old days of KFYI, circa 1988 when you would literally have 5-6 different local voices on every weekday and they would ALL be different from one another. Say what you will about Tom Leykis, but he was a great program director and visionary for the station at the time.

Um...it is when you're a talk radio station. KFYI far and away "surpasses" KTAR when it comes to that level of interaction. Does KTAR even do remotes anymore, or is social media the extent of their interaction these days? It's like they're banking on social media to someday replace PPM like how Arbitron replaced PPM. Ain't. Gonna. Happen.

Okay, fair enough. Let's look at this objectively:

1) Phone Calls. KTAR = 0, KFYI = > 0 (although not that many, but still more than nothing) Advantage: KFYI

2) Community Interaction, hitting the streets. KFYI personalities appear occasionally at various locations throughout the valley, shooting events (yee-haw), car dealerships, etc. In addition, during all four debates (three presidential and one vice presidential) KFYI has been out and interacting with the audience both on the phones and putting mics in the crowds at local pubs to discuss the election. Meanwhile, KTAR personalities venture outside of the studio virtually never. Their post debate coverage for two debates (and presumably tonight's as well) does feature a few 'man on the street' type interviews that are live, but most of the discussion is an in studio group. Advantage: KFYI.

3) Social Media. Both KTAR and KFYI have a facebook and twitter presence. Occasionally KFYI uses facebook as a means to incorporate individuals into contests such as the Barely Famous Nearly Young's "think like the media". I don't believe any hosts have directly read messages from facebook or twitter on the air, although I can't say that for certain. Meanwhile KTAR hosts will read a few remarks from twitter or facebook on the air, although over the past few weeks this has been seemingly non-existent. It's as if the listeners just don't exist. Advantage: KTAR by a tweet I guess.

4) Email, website, miscellaneous communications. KFYI has the standard yawnfest Clear Channel site design, not bad, not revolutionary by any means. Show hosts do have their own pages, there are comments, links to podcasts/on demand media, etc. KTAR's site is virtually the same, shows have their own pages, links to podcasts/on demand media, comments, etc. KFYI hosts are more likely to read your email on the air or respond directly as has happened in the past, but that sample size is too small for me to directly declare that aspect a win one way or the other. Overall though... Advantage: None.

...

So really Kool Listener Lauren, KTAR is not more interactive. Their news coverage is slightly superior as long as the sun is up, then they're both awful after dark. Radio stations are chartered to serve the community, and I don't feel that either (especially KTAR) does so. Period.

Au contraire, mon ami. KTweetAR runs circles around KFWhyEye when it comes to using social media. TNBO just figured out how to blog...but blogging is so last decade. The amount of involvement KTweetAR puts into the Autism and PCH drives can't be topped by any radio station. TMISU know how to spend money, and not foolishly.

Their news coverage is slightly superior as long as the sun is up, then they're both awful after dark.

Slightly? KTweetAR's news department outnumbers KFWhyEye's by at least four to one. Their on air product speaks for itself. No live body in the KFWhyEye newsroom after 7pm, but at least there's a pulse over at 92~Three. Given the almost non-existent audience after 7pm on both stations, why would any operator waste money staffing a big newsroom at night?

Radio stations are chartered to serve the community, and I don't feel that either (especially KTAR) does so.

Actually they're licensed and both stations serve the community very well. But community service isn't the only way to measure success: ratings and revenues are a big part of it.

Double period..
