Another "boot" on 101.3?

Scanning the FM dial during my lunchbreak (in Easton), I noticed a station running Classical music (in mono) on 101.3 MHz. It didn't seem local as I noticed some airline scatter in the mix, as well as WKCI trying to come in. Any ideas? No WFNX translator to speak of. I wonder.........

Not technically related, but I was in Danvers yesterday just off Rt 1
and boy that 101.3 translator of WFNX was coming in very strong.
I'd say it covers the Back Bay area, and much more...<P ID="signature">______________

I've also been occasionaly hearing what sounds like a Classical pirate in mono on 102.1. It's a weak but audible signal in the Boston northwest and west suburbs, strong enough to cut out the fringes of WSAK Hampton, NH or WAQY Springfield. It's not bleed-over from WCRB 102.5, definitely different programming.

I've never heard Classical pirates before. I'm surprised that they seem to suddenly be popping up in that genre, I'm guessing in response to the likely speculation that WCRB will be dropping the format.

I wonder if they'll try to sell ads like some of the ethnic and urban formatted pirates do? I've also recently heard an ethnic pirate on 102.1, but not since the Classical one appeared.

Just checked 101.3 here in Allston, it's still the WFNX translator. Must be a pirate in your area, or perhaps where you were there was somebody listening to an iTrip or a satellite that travels over the FM waves. See if it's there again tomorrow.

Also, I've been noticing a Spanglish pirate on 102.9 in the Brighton/Chestnut Hill area over the past month or so. They're playing mostly Reggaeton and Tropical music, and the announcers have been speaking in Spanish and English. Just throwing it out there...

Are you thinking of Choice-FM? If so, it's reggae, not reggaeton, and it's Jamaican.

Ive seen pictures of 102.9, they're using one of those el-cheapo Ramsey antennas you can buy on Ebay, vertically polarized with a good 15° mechanical tilt near the roof of the building...

Basically a poor physical mount...

Wow they are ballsy as well...

From their website
"WCFM broadcasts at 2000 radiated watts from its studios in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Our broadcast radius extends into the Boston metro area for approximately 100 miles from the studio, and contains almost 100,000 potential listeners. Although the exact number of listeners can never be determined.

WCFM's average weekly listenership cume is between 10,000 and 80,000 listeners"

WPKX in Enfield transmits from over 530 feet above average terrain and at 2,200 watts, and doesn't nearly reach 100 miles. I guess their claim should say approximatley 100 miles, + or - (really just minus) 90 miles. At 2000 watts with such a low antenna, their signal gets out maybe 10 miles. Add in the the 15° beam tilt on the antenna and you get a coverage area thats even more reduced.

10k to 80k listeners? hardly.

But here is where they are really balsy...

"Anybody can be a DJ at WCFM. First you must contact the Program Director to declare your interest, by either calling 617.406.7878 or by e-mailing [email protected]"

Hey FCC, there's the number to call...

.... Quite the pirate.

Any station that is not off the pru or wers has terrible blead over on all of my radios

Choice FM was commissioned WCFM in 2004. Originally, the call sign letters stood for Caribe FM. When the radio changed its name to Choice FM in June of 2005, the acronym was changed to stand for The people choice.

...and I thought radio free brattleboro was ballsy by having their address and phone listed in the phone directory (in the white pages under "R", as well as under "Radio Stations and Broadcast Companies" in the yellow) year after year after year. Of course the FCC finally caught up with them. Took 'em a while, tho. Government intelligence ain't what it used to...well don't even let me get started on the myth of "government intelligence"! 'Nother thread, 'nother board, 'nother time. :)

WRCI is Radio Continentale. They used to have studios in Hyde Park, now it's Brockton I guess. Typical of pirates, they stay on the move.
But their signal is on 102.1, I've never heard them on 101.3.

Choice contests...

Last night there was a contest on Choice-FM. A listener won "a DVD you won't find anyplace else". A 'pirate' DVD maybe? The lucky listener, who correctly identified a song as the Adams Family Theme song, was invited to come to the studio to pick up her prize. Don't most stations at least mail their prizes?

I just got in from a ride through Brockton. 101.3 has been found, this one was easy, even at night! It's running the same programming as the 102.1 in Boston. If you look at that website (http://www.radiocontinentale.com/), you will see why it was so easy for me to find it...
